I heard from a chum that movie quality differs from Ati and Nvidia. Is this true or is he full of hot air?

Historically, ATI has generally had better 2D image quality than nvidia. The difference depends on what two cards/series you're comparing though.

agreed. my ati r9500 totally blows my gf4 440mx away in 2d and 3d. It's soo much crisper and brighter it's unbelievable. the T.V output on my r9500 is also much better than my MX

Remember Nvidia first came out in an age when there were like a dozen video card manufacturers...they had to be great at something, not just average..so they concentrated their R&D money and their efforts for 3D.

Same with 3DFX....previous benchmarks easely show that Number 9, Matrox, S3 among many others beat any Nvidia card with 2D applications....

Of course the only 2D benchmark that matters is movie playback...My Radeon 9500 Pro is better (not by too much albeit) than my GeForce3 Ti500 and also better than my friend's GeForce4 Ti4200 128MB...

its all about rendering..heh...then again Nvidia figures not too many people would watch movies on their computer..whereas ATI is more for multipurpose multimedia cards (thus their All in Wonders)

most likely? lol you dont really know, do you? this isnt just about movie quality, its picture quality overall.

as i said earlier, everything is better on my ati card. i watch divX movies a lot on my pc thru my tv and av system, and the tv is vastly superior on my ati. even basic 2d is clearer
