View Full Version : AMD 'evaluating' 400MHz FSB for Athlon XP

AMD has said it is at least thinking about upping the Athlon XP's front side bus speed to 400MHz.
An Athlon XP with a 400MHz FSB appeared on an AMD roadmap described by Japanese web site PC Watch last week. The site claimed AMD will launch an Athlon XP based on the Barton core, with 512KB of L2 cache and a 400MHz FSB late April/early May. Performance ratings, it said, will range to at least 3200+.
AMD, not surprisingly, doesn't comment on this kind of speculation. However, Ace's Hardware, speaking to an AMD operative, asked whether the company would increase the Athlon XP's FSB to 400MHz the better to compete with Intel's upcoming Canterwood chipset and its 800MHz FSB.
The AMD guy admitted that the company is "evaluating the possibility of moving Athlon XP to a 400 FSB".
Not exactly confirmation of PC Watch's roadmap, but a sign surely that they're onto something. ®

sounds nice...thanks for the update unseen menace

the newest t-bread "B" chips are handling the 400mhz fsb whith ease. the only reason it is not supported is because of the chipset makers.
for one VIA was supposed to support the 400mhz fsb for the bartons release but was not able to get the chipset out in time so they released it as a 333mhz fsb chip. even the 1700+ & 2100+"B" 266mhz fsb chips are hitting 400mhz fsb.
so in a sence, i would say AMD has already released a 400mhz fsb chip!;)
A friend of mine was telling me that a 200mhz bus wouldn't oc as well as a 133 or 166 bus. Is there any validity to that? Also, it seems that intels on average are getting higher overclocks. Is any of that because of the 4x100mhz bus as opposed to a 2x200mhz bus? Or is it just the chipsets and ram that affect it?

I think thats fairly accurate. A 200mhz bus wouldnt have as much headroom as a 133 or 166. Im not sure about the intel buses, I would guess that it has more to do with the fundamental architecture that intel chips can go much higher. Less work per mhz.

True, but a 200mhz bus chip would have more speed to begin with ;)
Arg just when I think I've finally nailed 200fsb after months of trying, all the "non-OCers" are going to have it
who exactly are you reffering to zero?! :D

Nobody...just people in general who don't OC and buy expensive equipment :p
lmao i think you were reffering to me but whatever...my order goes in soon :D
and i do oc...i've just been held back by my board and memory lately...

I wanna say that I heard/read a long time ago that the XP architecture was designed to run up to a 200fsb. The 200fsb was the upper limit for the XP. I would be suspicious of what is meant by "evaluating." It may be that they are looking into the actual capability of the chip to run with a 200fsb or in my opinion, they are "evaluating" the economic impact of adding a "new" chip to the market with the current CPUs, the Bartons and the current XPs. Maybe they wanna milk the market while they can and then introduce the "new" chips for more cash.

Nice info. Hehe, an "operative". I wonder if that was an intentional leak of info, or if AMD is really strict on keeping its plans classified.
EDIT: We get signal. :EDIT

No I wasn't referring to you at all
Now move zig! ;)
