A crash/lockup caused by Northbridge Chipset or the CPU?

I heard if computer locksup its probably due to memory.
If it gives errors its due to CPU.
But how can you tell if northbridge is crapping out on you or not.

one obvious way is to test the cpu on another mobo----my 1.0a will only do 1.5 on the 6ba+iv (even though the board should hit 155 fsb) and the same 1.0A with the same RAM and video card, etc...will hit 1.68 on the TISU...
