Disclaimer: I dont really have the tech background to discuss this in depth, I was just thinking about it and decided to throw it out there. Hopefully someone more qualified can pick it up :D

Would hyperthreading technology be able to work in a multipule cpu system? I doubt that this is on any roadmap in the next few years, but purely theoretically, would it be possible? Since both HT and SMP help with multitasking, could we one day run 15 instances of F@H, or something else rediculous like that, on a HT Xeon system?

its my understanding that hyperthreading doesn't really need anything special outside of the cpu. but i guess it can be enabled/disabled by the mobo etc.

so since its basicly regulated just by the cpu, you could run 4 instances of seti on a dual xeon system currently. at least thats my guess.

I once heard that TC had SETI running on a dual HT system, and had great results with the 4 simultanious clients. There shouldn't be any problem since HT is done inside the CPU, and it will HT the apps that get sent to it by whatever tells that CPU which apps to run. (what do ya think of 'whatever' for technical :D)

I didnt think you could run two 3.06 P4's togther? Maybe you can...

Well the dual intel cpus are the xeons and they have hyper-threading.

Yeah, all the Intel XEONs have HT enabled, and are specifically built for SMP. Dual XEON boxes boot up displaying four logical processors, and Windows 2000/XP task manager shows four processors as wel.

Of course, you have to run an app that is tuned for an SMP system anyway, so it probably would already work well even on a single HT processor. Dualie HT is just that much better :)

Ah, I didnt realize that Xeons had HT. Shows how much i know about the Xeon processor line.

I think Xeons have had HT for close to 1.5 years if I am not mistaking. A smp & HT rig is my dream, only problem is that my dreams are never affordable.

My dream is that 64 Ultra-SPARC comp that Sun sells set that up folding
