View Full Version : Catalyst 3.2 and Unreal2
Just got my Sapphire 9500 Pro in last week and in Unreal2 some of the textures seem to flash in and out. Other games work fine (UT2003, SOF2) I'm pretty sure its a driver problem b/c the game worked fine with my GF3 but I wanted to get some opinions first. Yes I completely reinstalled everything fresh including OS.
I'm using the latest Powered by ATI drivers: CATALYST RADEON 3.2 (7.84) with XP pro SP1 and directx 9.0a
Has anybody else had similar probs with these drivers or could it be directx? What about older drivers?
Being an ATI noob (no Ati cards since rage128) If I do switch to older drivers what has to be done to remove the new drivers? will a simple safe mode uninstall work?

I've been using the 3.2s for about a week now and play Unreal2, I haven't seen any problems. Did you make sure and remove all traces(registry) of the nVidia drivers before installing the ATi?
I did a format and fresh install of windows after the 9500 pro came in
I installed the Unreal2 v2100 retail patch, maybe thats what did it? Do you have the patch installed memphist0?

The only thing I can think of is some sort of hirearchtical Z artifact or something... Did you mistakenly try "modding" your 9500 Pro card? That's the only thing I can think of right off the bat.
I'm a pretty heavy user of UT2K3, and the only thing I can see on very rare instances is where the detail texture (ie the 2nd texture applied to surfaces when you're up close to the surface) sometimes actually isn't exactly on the same plane as the texture. Basically what I see is, if you're in an external camera or something and get RIGHT UP to the surface, every once in a while the detail texture on top of the surface tears as the camera pans "through" it.
If you're actually playing, it doesn't happen because your character cannot get that close to the surface. Only if you're spectating or if the level is finished and you're in the camera view panning around the highest scoring player before the next level loads.
That's all I can think of, and my card definately deserves to be giving me more problems than that :)

Yep, I've had it before and after the patch and no texture problems. I'll play some more tonight and see if I see anything.
no mods, no overclock
the problem I have is similar to what you mentioned where entire layers of texture such as walls, bridges, walkways etc.. disappear and reappear but it happens whether close-up or far away and I can stay in the same spot and watch the texture come in and out
I have not had any problems at all with UT2K3 which I play fairly regularly

i have the same problem! but i have the cat 3.1s, so im not sure if its a driver problem. what we do have in common though, is that we both installed the patch. i played for about 4 hours before the patch, and had no problems. after i installed the patch (trying to get better performance), i noticed the walls and groud dissapearing. ive since uninstalled U2, cuase i didnt play it very much, but im thinkin the patch causes this. hope that helps.

The 9500 Pro has a functioning Hierarchail Z ;)

I didn't get to mess with it last night but when I get home tonight I'll try reinistalling it without the patch and see if that helps.

I'm wondering if its a problem with the 9500 and not the 9700. I played for about an hour or so last night and saw no problems. I did have 2xfsaa and 8xaf on so they may have help clean up the textures.
hmmm... I have AA and AF both turned off, all sliders set to performance and vsync on, maybe that has something to do with it

I'd definately turn vsync off and while your at it it couldn't hurt to turn on the texture filtering(aa and af)
I tried enabling and disabling various combos of AA, AF, and vsync but nothing worked so I uninstalled the game and ran it without the patch and now it works fine.
This thread would fit better in the Games forum now :D
