anyone seen a 7.1 sound system anywhere? i wonder if it would be possible to use a 4.1 and a 3.1 or something like that to get 7.1 sound

There is no such thing....as far as i know

Furhtermore if you dont havehardware that supports whatever your trying for then it doesnt work...ie you cant hook up 5 speakers and a sub to a stereo and get 5.1 surround sound.

Currently the "highest" is 6.1 a front, a year, front left/right, rear left right. and 1 sub

Actually timmyqwest there are at least 3 sound cards out that do 7.1. M-Audio has one and Hercules has two.

I'd suggest get a 5.1 and 2.1 system. I've never heard of a 3.1 and the 5.1 will give you a true center channel speaker.

No guys, 9.1 is where it's at (aka: octaphonic :D) :)

Left Front (Bottom)
Right Frong (Bottom)
Left Front (Top)
Right Front (Top)
Center
Left Rear (Bottom)
Right Rear (Bottom)
Left Rear (Top)
Right Rear (Top)
Sub

With that kind of set up, you could not only get the 2D plane surround, but a 3D space surround. You could have something come from above you and to the left, and make it move downard and to the right.

Mmmmmm.... Sound..... :)

Though I haven't heard of even home theater systems with that kind of stuff going on.... :D

Yea....there is really no reason not to have say a 9.1 system. When you think about it. Sounds in real like can come in any direction around you. So if you are going for realism in gaming/movies you want as many speakers around you as possible.

From what I know the Hercules Fortissimo III has 7.1 support, and there are some creative speakers that offer just taht.

i beleive the source has to be recorded for however many channels you are wanting to listen to it in, currently i know of nothing that is recorded in 7.1 (or 14.2 for that matter)

madcow235

nothing is recorded in it but I can dream

anyway, I never understood what people need all those speakers for anyway. How could you possibly place 7 speakers around you in a BALANCED fashion?

It's all about wanting something, doesn't necessarily have to do with the effect. I mean some people claim to be able to tell the difference between distortions of the sound curve even an osilloscope has to use very small scales to see. Can they actually? No one knows, maybe those people can, either that or they're just addicted to buying things.

Don't misunderstand me, I am a lover of sound. I will spen good cash on quality stereo components, headphones, speakers, etc. Just for my buck I would rather have quality over quantity. I never got into the surround sound thing, I am more of a stereo guy.

well, i remember that one day i was messing with an old 1996 flex system, and it stopped working.......i took the altec lansings off it, and set them up with two other h/k speakers.......playing renegade (the only fps i had at the time that works on my dell pos)(its not mine by the way) and it was amazing......i got better scores being able to know which way i was being shot.......so much fun too, but i havent seen 7.1 anywhere, and no quality 2.0 sound syss to mix with a high quality 5.1.......but, unlike that one guy side, a computer was meant for overclocking.....and enjoying watching it run fast (gaming)........hence my 4200 clocked at 300 and 630......hehe

this is what you want for a nice gaming system....
http://www.jbl.com/home/synthesis/productlist.asp?SerId=Syn6

all for the low low price of $109 000

good for 45000sq feet.

;) Their cheap stuff could be considered crap, but I doubt many people would call that 110,000 dollar system crap....

Looks overpriced to me though, for what you get...

personally i woul suggest Yamaha for surround - their system are incredible and i am looking to get one of their newer systems, one of those crazy 7.1 or 14.1 system, they are nuts, speakers everywhere!..lol

considering they make such sweet instruments, i would think they have a good ear in what music and sound should be like and how it should be heard.

The only problem with Yamaha is that their speakers from my experience are not very good...

Their electronics are great IMO, but the speakers are not so hot. Selling the speakers at best buy doesnt give me too much of a vote of confidence for them either... ;)

I don't know... those front standing liquid cooled Yamaha speakers I saw once at Best Buy had sound comparible to the competition/professional **** I've heard... granted the system was near $3,000...

nah, Yamaha aren't good speakers at all, and their electronics are over priced.

I must prefer Paradigm or Bose for my speakers. And Sony or Marantz for electronics.

The powered speakers in my school's auditorium are amazing, there are three of them (left, right, centre), they are powered, and each has a power output of 1500 watts or so. I forget what brand they are, I will post tommorow and tell u. Our two subs are powerd buy a Ashley amp with 500 watts a side.

We got this in the living room at our house. Your standard 5.2 setup (Stereo Sub out using DD EX) with the four speakers up on the ceiling all around. Its actually 9.2 setup here :) . There is no true channel support for doing this but it does tend to fill the room much more and improve overall sound quality. Our living room is huge so it kinda makes sence to have a system like this. Our system value is somewhere between $20000~$25000. All Polk Audio RT2000 speakers all the way around with a 53" sony and so forth. Got the 10 foot screen on the way. I cant wait to hook my PC to this thing.

Has any one realized, that nothing is in 7.1, or 9.1?!??!?!!
Few games are in 6.1!!!! No DVDs are in 7.1.
The only thing its good for is stuff you can mix between the channels, and dont have distinct channels. IE: Mp3s and divx

Not true,

Any game that officially supports EAX 2.0 supports as many hardware channels that the sound card can produce. You can have infinite channels in real-time where as per frame such as movies, most DVDs are restricted to 6.1 DTS ES.

Some of the newest Dolby Digital EX movies can handle true 7.1 Surround.

Im gonna build a "9.5" system! :P Not properly tho. (3 amps)
Its my 2 ch. speakers in my room (3-way speakers). My sisters 2 ch. RCA CD Player. And eventually (when i get my computer in my room) my 5.1 speakers.

DAMN!! THAT WILL BE ALOT OF BASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

pvc_and_frost

many people underestimate the need of a good sound system
i went from ****ty 0.0 surround sound to 4.1 and my counter-strike game greatly improved....also i like the music...and when getting new speakers make sure the subwoofer is at least 100 watts with a controller

JeffW
05-01-03, 06:46 PM
wtf is 4.2 surround sound you ****** are we going to have 2 subwoofers...maybe we should get 71 for 7.1 surround sound...there ya go!

talk about vibrations....I think with 71 subwoofers you would have an orgasm sitting there

I never liked Yamaha speakers. My dad has really ****ty ones, but he listens to classical music, so they are fine for that.
But one time (this is in his office) i was playing Hexen 2 with the bass on full, and one of the people thought it was thunder........................................... .......................... .....yeeah........ and the bass on it is PREETTTY WEAK

Mr.Guvernment
05-04-03, 12:25 AM
yep - i heard it from the pro's - Yamaha speakers are crude!

makes no sense to me, i mean why make a great receive and amp if you are going to have crap speakers - why bother, save the $$$ and spend it on your other products, although that is what thay are doing, hence why they got crap speakers!
