I was wondering why more heat caused shorter processor life...and yes, i understand that its mostly voltage, but i just want to know about the heat component of proc failure (say longevity difference of a proc at 43 idle and 51 load to a proc at 30 idle 40 load)
links work too! i couldnt find anything on google..........
thanks a lot

Did you spend much time searching on google ? ;)

Well the only reason I could think of is electromigration.

Here is the link I found that will explain it:

Heat can cause accelerated electromigration but i wouldnt worry about it, as it could mean the difference between a cpu working for 12 years or 7 years, and you will probably have a new one long before that becomes an issue. I can't give you any numbers, as it will vary depending on the processor, the process used to make it, voltage, and many other variables.

Unless you are really cheap...don't worry about the lifespan...is it even tested?

Seems a non issue. Like has been said, cpu's outlast their effectiveness anyways. If i kill one ever two years, so what. I will need a new one by then anyways....

7 years ago a pentium 2, 300 was probalby top of the line, just walk over to ebay and see how much it would cost to replace....

Hehe, even though I have a new system now I'm still running since 1999 I think an overclocked celeron a 300 to 450. Sure's it's a little unstable but only when ambient temperature is around 80 f or higher.

If CPU longevity is a REAL CONCERN, look at what NASA sends into space, that stuff IS NOT GOING TO BE REPLACED ANYTIME SOON--unless a meteor smashes it.

Of course, space temperatures are quite a bit different than they would be in an atmosphere. No worries about condensation, infinite heat dissipation...... hard not to get started on something like this...

hehe the space shuttle uses 8086 microprocessors or something - over 20 years old if I'm not mistaken - so electromigration was not a problem for slow chips.

Lol incorrect! dissipating heat in space is VERY HARD. This is due to harving to methods of removing heat disapear totaly. As space is virtually a vacume you cannot have any conduction or convecton only radiation. Radiation does not give out a huge amount of heat so things will easily overheat.

Heh, I pretty much contridicted myself in my statement. I was trying to state that you don't have air or water to move heat away from the source. Yet I stated 'infinite heat dissipation'. In the shade, it is easier to dissipate heat through radiation. But in the sunlight.. different story.

It is true that the life will be reduced but unless it is overclocked really high the CPU will last you long enough.

Thank You,

HEY ive got one for you. Save a dollar a day and by the time your processor dies youll have enough to replace it with a better one...so NP...right? Unless of course you do something insanley irresponsible.
