Howdy all,
Old Skool SETI guy here...was top 10 on our SETI team before
last summer hit my SETI Farm so hard...I honestly heated my
apartment one winter with NOTHING but SETI machines.
Anywho, I've recently gotten back into building PCs and I have
4 folders going now. Looks like I'm quickly climbing the stats!
Now I just have to learn how to setup all this software to
monitor my folding etc.

Welcome to the fold!!!
www.em-dc.com
Download electron microscope 3 and donate to the guy who made it if you feel so inclined.
The directory/partition where your folding resides on each machine on your network needs to be shared so that the main computer where you install EM3 can access those directories.
EM3 is pretty easy to setup. Browse for the fahconsole.exe and click "add box". Give it a name. There are many options you can set, so just ask us about them and we'll have answers. You can make EM3 transperant for instance and can skin it (there's even a OC.com skin in our team's FAQ sticky at the top of this section of the forums).

Welcome to the team!!! We are trying to catch OCAU so your extra power is much appreciated!

Cool, I put EMIII on one box last night, and didn't realize I
needed the other boxes shared to get them linked....
I was tired.
Does EMIII show me the actual protiens, or are those pretty
graphics....just pretty graphics?
I'm glad I can help the team...I really got tired of SETI, and Folding
seemed the more approrpriate thing to do with my power.
Speaking of power, I have two more overclocked AMD 1700+
coming on today, both at 200Mhz FSB and burning in with
Prime95. Plus I addes my new (and first) P4 on an ABIT BH-7
last night, running at 195X12.
Looks like I'm doing 4.5 unites per 24 hour period on 4 machines
right now.

Welcome to the FOLD!!! EMIII just shows simulations of the proteins, i think they are just eye candy and I have it turned off in the options... Are you using the -advmethods -forceasm flags? If you want info on what they are just ask!

You can double or triple your production by using the Gromacs core. Its a different style of processing and different work units than the standard tinker core, using SSE and 3dnow optimizations.
To use gromacs, change the shrotcut that starts your client. you probably have it in your startup folder if folding starts when you boot up. There are other methods if you using task scheduling or the folding service install.
Right-click the shortcut and choose properties. Edit the target line like this example:
C:/directory/to/folding/fahconsole.exe
C:/directory/to/folding/fahconsole.exe -advmethods -forceasm
This will tell your folding client to grab gromacs work units which finish much faster on SSE capable CPUs like Athlons, P4s, morgan durons, and P3's and celerons above 566mhz.
Now just start your client with the modified shortcut from now on and as soon as you finsih the current WU, you'll start getting gromacs and you'll be rolling in points.
Hey Lonely Raven, welcome to the team. Thought I'd never see this day where a hardcore SETI dude like you would be folding. After you get points you will realize how much you've missed on!

Yikes! I didn't know that!! I'm switching them all now!!
Yodums, you'll get yours later!!
Lets see, I have
XP 2100+ at 166X13 = 2158
Dual1700 at 145X11 = 3190
XP 1700+ at 200X11 = 2200
XP 1700+ at 185X11 = 2035
XP 1700+ at 190X11 = 2090
P4-M 1.8 at 195X11 = 2145
------------------------------------
Total Folding Power: 13818 (and climbing as they burn in)
Some of you should prepair to be passed.
For some of you, that swishing sound was me already
passing you in the past 48 hours.
I'm going to go add some switches to my Folding Icon....

Crap, I'm reading through the setup, and I see now that
I need to set machine numbers. CRAP!
There has GOT to be an easier way to set all this up!
Arkaine23

The machine ID # allows you to run up to 4 instances of folding on any single machine. You only really need to cahnge it on your dually. Install 2 folding apps into seperate directories and make one machine ID 1 and the other machine ID 2.
Lonely Raven

Ok, got that.
I just went into the command prompt and ran the
FAH3Console -config
and changed that for Machine1 and Machine 2.
Plus I changed my Icon on each machine to have the
-advmethods -forceasm flags on them. And then I close and
restarted each console.
I've also got EMIII showing all 7 instances of FAH running.
Am I missing anything else?
Should I run two instances on my P4? Or does Hyper Threading
not help this any?
Thanx Arkaine.

Sounds like you've got it all setup. Now sit back and enjoy the stats.
I don't think HT will help folding much. But moving a P4 from tinker work to gromacs work will help it a lot. You're welcome to run as many clients as you like, though that will start to eat up some of your system memory and I/O and only really help you on those rare occaisions when stanford's assignment servers are down. Its kind of the closest thing to a cache of WU's you can get, but its hardly worth it.

I thought I read HT was helping quite a bit on CPUs that support it, something like 25% boost for running two issues. Some people were reporting on some systems that it doesn't use all the CPU unless you use 2 issues.

Bah! Power Outage this morning trashed some of my WU
I think.
That's what I get for turning my printer on. (sigh)
Welcome to the team, Lonely Raven!
If I remember correctly, HT is only possible if the CPU, MoBo, and BIOS all support it ... and Intel disabled it on all P4's slower than ... erhm ... 3 GHz? It was a pretty high clock rate. Maybe 2.5 GHz.
I think I also remember reading somewhere that the app might have to do something special.
I vaguely remember the developer at Stanford (Vijay) saying outright that HT buys folding nothing.
Lonely Raven

That's good to know. Besides, this is a P4 Mobile. HT might
be cut just to save power or something silly.
Either way, I've got almost 14 gigs of folding going.
And unfortunatly I've had to back down on the overclocks on
two of them. I came home from work today to find two of them
locked up in the middle of a fold...but oddly, both of them passed
12 hours of Prime95!
I was hoping to push them just a little bit further...looks like I'll
have to hold off on that till I can figure out where my weaknesses
are...

Gromacs is as tough or tougher than Prime95. Errors just aren't so conveniently visible so most people stick with Prime for stability testing.
You can use the flag -verbosity 9
to get the maximum feedback in your Fahlog file. Usually only the folding betatesters use this flag.

Now that's what I call folding!!! 14 Ghz should take you up to something like 4000+ points per week.
Lonely Raven
04-09-03, 08:54 PM
I've had to back it down a few 100Mhz, but I'll let them all
burn for a few weeks and see if I can bump them up again.
4000+ I assume is good? I really have no idea. LOL
Lonely Raven
04-09-03, 11:45 PM
Well, that's about 2000 people on the team I've passed.
I have a feeling I'm closing in, but not soon to pass the
REAL folders soon?

Hehe, I'm sorry, did I bump you down one?
Looks like I only passed about 150 people last night.
The ascent is going more slowly now, but still, onwards and
upwards!

I wonder what I did wrong? I went to startup, and selected properties from the icon, changed target to:
"C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\winfah.exe -advmethods -forceasm"
and the message I get is "The name c:\pro... specified in the target box is not valid. Please make sure the path and filename are correct "

You need to put the -advmethods -forceasm AFTER the
quotes.
I did the same thing on one of my systems not knowing any
better. But quickly realized the issue.
Just move it to after the quotes and It'll be fine!
Also, you'll know it's running because you will see it say something
like starting client with -advmethods -forceasm
