View Full Version : discussion of multiplayer hacks

Every now and again discussion comes about in the games forum about multiplayer hacks or cheats, where to get them, how to use them, etc. And as an avid multiplayer gamer I'd like to lobby against allowing such discussion. Anyone who's ever had a game ruined by a rampart hacker will most certainly agree.

Game developers avidly denounce the use of such 3rd party software to modify their games, and they (some better than others) continuously release patches to fix exploits in their software. Sony/Verant even went as far as seeking legal action against a creator of a piece of software that allowed a functional compass/path finding device to be implemented into Everquest. The creation of such 3rd party also in nearly all cases requires the reverse engineering of the game that it is designed to modify. Almost every EULA I've ever clicked accept to specifically prohibits such action.

These forums have a great set of rules that keeps discussion on topic, educational, non-offensive, and legal. We don't allow instructions for DOS attacks, or other such malicious abuse of security, to be posted. We don't allow the specifics of key generators or software cracks to be posted. We don't discuss the fine points of copying software/movies/music be it used for personal backup or other purposes. Even emulation becomes a grey area. So if all of these things are disallowed why should the free discussion of multiplayer hacking be allowed? It almost seems hypocritical.

Thanks for your time.

I say kill the discussion if modifying the game in question is strictly forbidden. For example, I haven't seen anything prohibiting mods to the PC version of GTA3. There are plenty of them out there.

Which brings up an interesting point... in a word half-life, we all know the rampart hacking that goes on within the community (in particular counter-strike) and valve/sierra support the communitys efforts to modify half-life. But they constantly release anti hacking (VAC, Valve Anti-Cheat) updates.

And there is nothing prohibiting mods to such games as Half-Life GTA3 and the Unreal seriese. But does this make hacking in these games alright? The developers obviously don't think so, or they wouldn't spend countless hours combating such hacks.

That link should be one of the censored terms here.

How do you define the difference between a mod and a hack?

"That link is mean!" isn't a sufficient warning. I can think of a number of sites which I could describe as "mean" but none of them can result in a computer crash. Some of the blame falls on you for not supplying adequate warning.

Yes, I do.

None of the blame is on me. I didn't make him ingore the waning that i put there. i didn't make him click the link...so again where was it my fault? Of course you don't deserve blame. You only posted a link capable of crashing someone's computer, gave almost no warning as to the nature of the beast, and then acted arrogant when someone actually got mad at you over it.

No blame at all.

Edit - Thank you for clarifying your warning. Less chance of someone clicking it now.

eh?
04-15-03, 07:21 AM
Well im glad you looked it up. But i assure you i don't care what you or he thinks of me.

i never acted arrogant. i told him not to threaten me because he ingored the warning.

The link is malicious and not allowed here. Flaming is not allowed here. Let's get back to the topic at hand, shall we?

I'm not going to comment on the allowance of such topics as I don't really know where the line is drawn on a cheat for a game, whether it be single player or multiplayer.

I will say this, though...I can't stand cheaters in multiplayer games. They ruin them for me and for everyone else playing. If someone asks for one of these cheats in the Games topic, or explains how to use a cheat, let me know. That thread will be deleted and/or locked. Just send me a PM, email or IM and I'll take care of it, otherwise it'll stay put.

Some may wish to call that abuse of my power here, but hey, you're abusing my game. ;)

Hacks are not inherently bad. As long as you tell the other player before the game what it is and what it does, and give the other player the hack, it's ok. Playing with a hack against someone who does not have the hack is, however, very unsporting and should be avoided.

It takes all the fun out of the game.

and just so you didn't get confused Thelemac i didn't flame him either, i asked him a question

You broke the rules, and you can't take the fact that we enforce them? There was no question in the flame, nor is there any question that it was a flame. Calling somebody stupid and telling them that they're not intelligent enough to read is most definately a flame. As to your being arrogant, you are being arrogant. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm being arrogant right now. It's a statement reflecting your actions, not you as a person.

The link was not removed because people whine too much, it was removed because it was malicious. In the future, do not remove my edits unless you talk to me about it first.

In many cases your view is correct, but not in all cases. Many ganes have flaws. A strategy game i play (C&C:RA2, Yuri's Revenge) makes some sides much stronger than others. Modding it in such a way as to make it more even (this is subjective) would make it a nicer game to play.

I re-iterate: All players, or no players should do this or it is indeed unfair.

BTW: the phrase "You are arrogant" is a little more offensive than "you are being arrogant". I'm just pointing it out.

I never edit a post that follows the rules. Just because you don't agree that calling somebody stupid is a flame doesn't make it not be a flame or against the rules.

*edit to respond to below post*
You mean I edited the post with the malicious link? Something else that is not allowed...

As to not arguing, what do you think you've been doing?

think of the cheats in warcraft I II III and starcraft (on screen, every little thing she does, power overwhelming) the single player cheats... or the up up down down left right left right B A start code for konami games of yore... there left in by developers as easter eggs and what not... however I've yet to see a Dev leave in an Aim Bot.

and Thelemac your forgiven ;) :)
