sorry to ask such a n00b question. but what do all the abreviations stand for? I know what all the popular ones are CPU, RAM, mobo...etc. but I don't know the less common ones RMA, Vdimm (voltage of something?)...etc.
thanks in advance for helping out a newb.

An RMA is where you return something to a company because it went bad or it didn't perform the way it was supposed to. My guess is that RAM and CPUs get RMA'd most because of bad stepping, not enought FSB(Front Side Bus), etc. Vdimm is the voltage of the memory. Vcore is the voltage of the CPU. Anything else??

GPU - Graphics Processing Unit.
Mobo - motherboard
AGP - Accelerated Graphics Port.
Vmod - Voltage Modification
All I can think of right now.

RMA-Return Merchandise Authorization. Like ziptie said, it's just a return on merchandise.

perhaps someone with time on their hands should make a sticky worth post full of them?
if not I recommend you download SiSoft Sandra, the help file in that has a huge A-Z of abbs. for computer terms.
Vdimm btw is the voltage for your memory.

yeah, that would be awesome if someone could create a sticky, because I know when I was first into the comp. scene that would have helped me alot. I might try to do that tom. if I have time.

thanks, I'll look for Si Soft Sandra.
couple more questions. what's stepping? and multies are a number that changes the CPU clockspeed, by multplying the FSB? (i.e. 200Mhz FSB and 10 multie = 2000Mhz CPU speed?)

a stepping is another way of saying the revision of the processor...as time goes on they will refine the process removing any impurities that may have exists, so the better stepping will be the latest and will usually grant you with the best overclocks.
and yes the multipler x the fsb will give you the CPUs clockspeed.

You go the multi. part right.
Steppings are the Batches in which the processors are released in. The AIUHB is the newest stepping for the XP thoughbred line of procs. Then the stepping is broken down even further into weeks in which the proc. is made. Ex. 0310 is 2003 week 10 so the 2nd week in March 2003. The 1700 and 1800 are the only procs. I know in which they add the code DLT3C and DUT3C. Im not sure what those mean, but the DLT3C on the 1700+ in the OC'ing wonder chip.

You can find all the abbreviations you'd ever want to learn in the OC Dictionary (http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=109005)

thanks Captain, and everyone else.
couple other things, that i couldn't find in that guide. what do the RAM timings mean? 2-2-2-6...is jeberish to me:( and I couldn't find a explaination about it anywhere.
also do steppings get better as the code increases? like AQUFH > AQUFA, 'cause A comes before H?

Also I find www.webopedia.com to be very useful.

dimm = dual inline memory module
If you're ever not sure what an acronym stands for, search for it on dictionary.com . It has the definition of the acronym in most cases. At the least, it will tell you what the acronym stands for.
