Success at 95Mhz bus x 6.0 (2.0 setting in bios). Using Thermaltake Golden Orb modified
with a Sunon 60mm case fan attached in addition to stock Orb fan, used thermal paste. Core voltage 2.1V
Also runs stable at 100Mhz bus x 5.5

if your Mobo supports higher FSBs Id go with 5x112=560. You will get the best performance their because the L2 Cache on the MoBo runs at the FSB speed. And also you will OC the RAM a little :-)

I plan to get a FIC VA503A m/b as i am not
happy with the PC-CHIPS M598LMR (only 100 Mhz max fsb).
Any other suggestions comparable to the VA-503A?

why are you still using a K6-3, go get a Duron, they're cheap, and o/c great!

I agree with your waiting for the new AMD chipsets before upgrading to the K7 world. Everything changes there every 6 months or so. But, I don't see why you want to "upgrade" to a FIC VA-503A. It's a nice K6 platform, but you're not gonna get that much further. Since you apparently need an AT-format mobo, there aren't many alternatives to the FIC. 570 MHz isn't bad for a K6-III+ so why not just sit tight for a while?

but i would get a A7V and a 600 duron for a few bucks more and be so much faster because it should do 900mhz easy

my 600mhz duron can do 969mhz on 1.775V :)

Actually, the higher fsb won't affect his k6-3 as much as it has integrated 512 or 256k l2 cache unlike the k6-2 non-plus. My super socket 7 motherboard has speed settings to 124Mhz fsb. I doubt you could run it at that though even with pc133 ram as the agp and pci don't have right dividers for that, plus the motherboard's external cache would start having a lot of errors I bet. I suppose you could disable it with k6-2+ or k6-3, but I only have k6-2, without internal l2 cache.

Back in the day I ran my K6 III+ 450@600Mhz....stock cooling and voltage. This was on the FIC VA-503A. In fact, after I upgraded to my first Athlon I gave it to my little brother, and he was running it himself till just a few months ago. Now, his wife is using it to do her homework...lol. It wasn't a bad performer, and compared quite favorably to a Celeron 500 (un-overclocked, of course).

Yeah, the mobile K6's were the best ever made for Socket 7. I have my mom, my aunt, and my cousin set up with AT machines running them.

I've never had the luck that some of you have though. I have my cousin's K6-2+ 450 running at 550. I had to decap it, and bump the voltage up to 2.4 (2.0 is stock) to get that 100 MHz. Getting 125 MHz for .1 volt increase is amazing. For a K6 that is. :D

It would have been cool if AMD had made a Socket 7 Duron. Judging by the last of the Super 7 motherboards, they (the manufacturers) were expecting a better CPU than was ever available.

But I guess from AMD's perspective, the 321 pin Socket 7 would have been a limiting factor to future growth, so all of their efforts were focused on Socket A.

My guess has always been that 800 to 1000 MHz would have been the absolute performance limit of Socket 7.

Of course this led to the insanity of K6-3+ 550's going for well over $100.00 on Ebay.

I still have a K6-3 450 running in my old system. I should sell it on ebay. :)
