i have a sh#itty motherboard by ecs with a k7 550. the mobo does not have any multiplier nor voltage control. the mobo manual says to use athlon 500~850, the chipset is amd 750, i think. my q is... could i possibly overclock it past 850? oh.. i have a goldfinger overclocking card on the way, that's how i'm planning on oc'ing. any help will be appreciated

The mobo will probably support past 850, but you didn't specify which board you had. Some of the early AMD750 chipped boards will only do around 850mhz due to power constraints within the boards design. Second problem though is the 2nd level cache used on Athlon Slot CPU's. Unless that chip is a 750 or 800 inside remarked as a 550, than it is unlikely you will see anything over 750-800mhz with stability. The 2nd level cache cannot on a real 550 core CPU cannot handle the speed required of the fast speeds.
