Hey guys,

I'm dealing with a P4 2 GHz, 40 gig maxtor hdd, Aopen board, 256 ddr etc. It's running Windows XP Home. I have had some problems with it in the past and suspect it was the generic ram. When it boots up I get the Un-mountable Boot Volume BSD. I switched the ram to crucial but I'm guessing the damage has already been done. Could bad ram have caused some kind of hdd corruption? Also, do you think I'll be able to do an upgrade install? I am pretty confident the hard drive is not bad. Any suggestions on how to do this while keeping all program files and file structure etc. please help. Thanks(this system is for a client so I'd like to keep everything as intact as possible).

Still looking for ideas here. The partition file system is listed as unknown but I can still access files. Anything I could do in recovery console?

stick the windows disc in and do a repair then use "fixboot" sometimes you have to do it a couple times but it usually works

If I remember right your O/S has a bad boot record, it could be a file gone bad, there is somthing you have to do in regards to the startup disk and restoring your boot record. Can't remember If it comes to me I will post it, however win 98's way might be different than XP's way.

i had the same thing, did u partition the HD by changing it to FAT32 then partition then back to NTFS? i didnt realise and just used partition magic and made myself one without realising that it had to be changed back to NTFS
