Buying first pair of headphones

Ok first I want to say if I am posting this in the right forum so I am not then I am sorry in advance :)

I have about 50 to 60 bucks to get a nice pair of headphones for my computer. They will be mostly used for rock music and occasional gaming like Quake3 and Warcraft3.

Which headphones would you guys recommand? and why

Bose or Sony - i do not know any exact ones, but i personally would go for them.

Get some Grado SR60s from www.headphone.com . Nothng can touch them in your price range. :)

Grado is the ultimate headphone for me, but some other decent brands are Koss (high end models only), Sennheiser, Etymotic Research, and AKG. Bose is ok, but not really worth the money IMO. Sony has yet to impress me.

Please, oh PLEASE just don't consider any Sony models, especially the V700DJ. While they may be good for sub-$50 headphones, these things go for at least $100, more commonly for $120~$130. Overpriced and not all that great.

Hoever, there is one headphone in the Sony lineup that is decent...the Sony V6 and Sony 7506. Both are the same headphone...the 7506 simply has a gold-plated plug to resist corrosion and is marketed towards the professional range, which is another "feature" which adds roughly $20 to the price :rolleyes: ;) . The V6's cost about $60, but they were recently discontinued so it's tough to find them at that price, or even for a price less than the 7506's.

I've heard the Sennheiser 212's are quite good, considering their price range. Etymotic's are nice and their ER-4S model considered to be the best one of the best headphones (rather canalphones which means they actually go inside your ear) on the market...only $270!

I'd also recommend going to HeadRoom (www.headphone.com) (http://www.headphone.com), as they have a lot of good, accurate information and recommendations about all things headphone. Pretty good prices, and I hear their service is fantastic! This would be a good place to go read up a bit. You can also go to Head-Fi (http://www.head-fi.org)...it's a forum with a bunch of geeks who are just as nutty with all things headphone, as some people are on here about computer equipment. ;)

EDIT: It is quite universally known among audio circles that Bose is crap. Please read this article (http://home.earthlink.net/~busenitz/bs.html) before you consider buying Bose...I would much rather see you spend the same money on something much better.

I was in pro audio for some time, and Bose was one of the few companies I tried to stay away from - they make all their money by marketing merely ok products as audiophile quality. Only thing I like from them is the noise cancelling stuff, but even that they overprice.

Sennheiser will give you more detail and accuracy

The higher you go in their product line the better the sound will be. Yes, you will be able to hear the difference.

I absolutely third those comments. Grado SR60's or the Sennheiser PX200's are probably some of the best budget headphones around. I'm still slaving over if I should just buy 1 pair or 2.
