Hi, I´m thinking about buying an AMD cpu & mainboard, and of course want to overclock it. Any advice which one I should buy? Talking about the cpu AND mainboard, I´, interested in Duron 700 mhz but like to hear some opinions or maybe hints for more suitable cpu´s to overclock.
Thx in advance, and merry Christmas to everyone.

If you're buying a motherboard to overclock Durons or T-Birds - you must ensure it has multplier and voltage settings on dip-switches and not just in BIOS.
The overclockers favourite is the ASUS A7V as it is configurable and relatively stable. It is also a matured product that has been bug beaten quite vigourously.
There are now a number of new motherboards about for overclocking Durons and Thunderbirds but they are not nearly as robust as the ASUS board.
If you do purchase the ASUS board - it comes in various revisions - and one one of them don't have dip-switches on - so watch out.
If you're buying a Duron - opt for a 700. Cheap and quite probably with a decent core. Unlike Intel CPU syteppings - AMD can be a little confusing - especially when they have two fabrication plants manufacturing one product at two different levels of quality (this is not a fcat but a believable point all the same).
Another good Motherboard is the Abit KT7. It has the voltage and multipliers adjustable within the BIOS, unlike the Asus which has dip switches. For the CPU's, the price difference between the Duron 600-800mhz is usually only $25, so get the fastest one you can, although most Durons will overclock to about the same speed. As for the Tbirds, they will go a little higher, but not much, most top around 1050mhz, but then you end up paying about twice the amount for the CPU.
has any body noticed the huge drop in amd chip prices , a 1 gig tbird at 187.00,seems this would be the best choice, and stop messing around with athlons and durons
are dip switches better than bios settings?

I have a Duron 700MHz on a A7V and I could not get mine over 900MHz whith the Bios settings, so I tried the dip's, and now I am testing 981MHz!!!!
So I think the bios settings/ Jumperfree mode sucks!

Thanks folks. I think I´ll try the Asus board
with 700 Mhz Duron.
