Stopping Advedrtising

Ok can anyone tell me how to stop the popup advertising that is going through my trillian? I have norton personal firewall 2003 and yet I still have popups make it through. It is working some because over 450 of them have been stopped today. Yet some still make it. Any ideas?

I am also running ad-aware and for some reason I am still finding a few recognized objects. Even though I ran it earlier today and found 16, I ran it tonight and found 11 more that weren't there the first time. This is basically hacking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway I can sue them?

In my experience Popups are related to either websites that you visit(which are obvious to see) and programs installed on your computer. The programs on your computer are that delightful spyware. The problem with removing spyware is that it reinstalls itself on startup the next time. For example I had something called virtual bouncer installed and it kept telling me I had viruses. Uninstalling it in add/removed programs didnt get it. I had to go into the registry and remove several keys attached to the program. It took me several tries, but I finally got it. I use trillian and it does not send pop ups to me.

If you have Kazaa, Grokster, Morpheus or any of the other P2P file sharing programs, you most likely have a lot of spyware already on the computer.

I agree with hardcorecomp...I don't think Trillian is your problem. Go into control panel and add/remove programs and look for anything you don't recognize, some of them being savenow, gator, eCommerce, some form of Bonzai something, eAnthology, New.Net Domains, and the list goes on and on. If you find something you don't recognize, look it up on google to find out what it is, and if it's spyware, kill it :)

If you have kazaa lite you don't get pop ups and stuff. If it bothers you, just download a pop up killer.

The easiest way I've found to get rid of pop-ups, is to format your HD, and install Windows 3.11.

I haven't seen a pop-up since.

One thing to watch for when you are browsing are thos pop-up download windows. I have seen them for Gator, and other spyware. If you don't click cancel you are screwed. The other thing that I have seen is where some new popup windows ask you to hit cancel to keep them open. Kind of tricky since everyone is used to hitting cancel.

Well I'm constantly removing files that are popup related by using ad-aware. And I don't see how they get past the firewall. I'm using windows 2003 server. SHouldn't be having this problem.

Could I just up the security level of my firewall and still allow certain programs to access the internet like trillian?

you might want to try opera for you broser, it has an option to block all but requested pop ups, and since i enable that option, i dont think that i have goten a singe pop up add. you can get opera at
www.opera.com

Are they popping up when your not surfing? Then it's probably a spyware program your running. Check your process list, kill anything non-familliar, then run ad-aware (can't delete a running exe).

If they appear while surfing, then it's just normal ads. Phoenix also has great popup blocking.

Start your system freshly, then wait, see if anything pops up. Then slowly start openning programs one by one (and closing them after), until you find the one that's spamming you.

Do you know where I can get some generic VESA drivers for Win3.1 -- ones that actually work with a Ti4200? Or better still, drivers specific for my card?

The popups I get come in the form of AOL messages and stuff like that. Not website ones.
