Sony optical drives are crap, just contact them and omit the little part about dropping it and see if you can RMA it.

Tons of people who DON'T drop there units have the same problem so you might get lucky.

I had this problem with my ps2, if you go to a sony outlet they can help you, unfortunatly it isnt cheap. I wasnt pleaed when it happend to me, and i have had a few friends who had the problem, best way to fix it is to talk to the people at Sony.

Well this right here is why I dont think that I will get Playstation 2. It looks like the Xbox just took the lead in which console that I will get for my kids. There are just too many people out there with Playstations that have this problem, and too many people out there making a killing on something that Sony should be taking care of charge free. Heck, I went through 4 playstation 1's in 4 years and all of them had a similar problem as the PS2's are having, crappy oprical drives/lasers.

riiight... and X-boxes have no known defects or easily broken parts :D

hehe... you might want to read up on the subject before making a decision based on the likelihood of breaking... xboxes break by the dozen... so do earlier ps2's unfortunately, gamecubes seem fairly well built, at least so far :D

ACtually - i can vouch for this..... friends and i went on a trip to disney, we put the gamecube and 4 wavebirds with games in a backpack and used it as carryon luggage.... of course we took good care of it, but remember, the cube WAS ALWAYS SHAKEN UP!.... the thing still works like a charm....

Durability award :::: the cube.

Also, take note that XBOXES don't make microsoft any money... it's the controllers and games that make money for them.... so think twice about how well the box must be built.... plus the grafix are STUNNING let alone awesome.

actually microsoft looses money on every xbox sold

think about it its a 733 celeron with a geforce 3 and a 10gig hdd for just under 200 dollars

Ahh, the reason that I said that I would get a console is for my kids. I have a very nice comp that suits my need for gaming nowdays. The only reason that I would own a console for myself is cause I love sports games (Football, Baseball, Basketball) and I think that the majority of those games are just funner in front of a TV with 3 buddies joining in the action playing CO-OP. Also, my uncle and cousins boucht X-Box's so that would be just one more reason for me to get one for my kids, being able to trade games helps the wallet.

thats true... i guess there is one advantage to a console... you dont all have to have your own computer and can be sitting nexst ot eachother...
