getting started

i know nothing of overclocking...

i have an amd 2-550mhz (that's what it says at startup. is that a k6-2 550? i'm not really sure) and a "system board" k6xv3+/66 mobo (Thats what the book says).

i want to know what i might be able to do with them and where to start. i don't mind learning about this my self but these sites have tons of info and i'm not sure where to start. i'd like to be pointed in the right direction. if anyone can answer any of my questions or offer advice, it would be greatly appreciated. mentor me! ha ha.

just go to the CPU data base and see what your chip should do with ok cooling

next

read the beginners section on the homepage

then read anything you can find on your set up

thanks for the tip about the board, however i have a question: i'm thinking the guy who built this computer sam fi'ed mi, i've read the book on the board and the highest amd chip listed is the k6-2 /533 mean while i'm trying to oc
a k6-2/550. does it seem like my mobo's celing is lower than my chip's celing (before i even try to oc)?

the guy who i purchased from is fair and will allow mi to upgrade if i want to. should i? i'm giving it serious thought. what should i look for if i do?

if you have a newer socket 7, i would try a k63+ 450, which can easily be overclocked to 550 or better (mine at 575....5x 115bus=575).

just make sure your mainboard will support the 2.0v core (processor designed for notebooks, but works excellent for desktop). due to its low core voltage and .18micron design, runs very cool.(my processor runs 575 with default core voltage of 2.0v)

chip can be had @ www.pricewatch.com for 60$ plus s/h.
