View Full Version : Duron 750 and Quake 3
I bought a Duron 750 and Abit KT7, overclocked it to 927 mhz ( 9x103 ), she runs fine on all applications, but crashes on me when I play Quake 3. The SOB will not got to 1 G. I put her back to 8.5x100, Quake 3 works fine. Any idea? anyone?

What heatsink/fan combo are you using? sounds like quake's stressing the chip and its getting a little warm and dying...With a good heatsink you might have better luck getting that Ghz...Also what voltage are you using? that could cause problems too if its not cranked high enough.
Yup, I think Mike was right,
If youve got the voltage at 1.85 then its definitly a heat problem.

I really doubt cooling is the problem. AMD chips run hot and are also less affected by heat. Besides, if you have to worry about your chip crashing whenever the temperature goes up, that will end up being a serious hassel.
One of the biggest myths of overclocking is that heat is the only reason a CPU will not run at a certain speed. Believe it or not, the quality of the CPU also effects whether or not it will run. Some CPUs just will not go beyond 900 MHz, it doesn't matter how much juice you give them or how much cooling they have.
With supercooling and supervolting you may be able to push your chip harder, but a larger HSF is generally not going to make the difference between a chip being stable or not (stock heatsinks which barely work excepted).
Games are the most stressful application on your system. Even a computer that can handle hours of Prime95 may bite the dust after a few minutes of UT. Try cranking the speed down a few notches, maybe to 900 MHz and see if you can run Q3 or UT stably (it gives you an excuse to play some games anyway!).

what power supply you have?
