View Full Version : is a TBird worth the price over a Duron?
I am currently shopping the 'net to build my next computer... I was thinking about building a 800 TBird, but I was wondering if it is really worth paying 50 dollars more for the tbird over the duron. What do you think?

If you play games, yes. If you don't play games, Duron performs nearly identically to Tbird. In-game performance of the Tbird is significantly higher than a Duron though, so it's worth the $50.

depends on whether you see glass half full or half empty.
my premise for computers has always been biggest bang for your buck!
this being said, i highly recommed duron 650 at pricewatch, can be had for less than 60$(maybe $55. you will be able to overclock this puppy to at least 850mhz (have seen 1ghz). i had a duron 650 which ran stable @ 963mhz.
compare a tbird......well, youre looking at least 95(maybe 100$), you may be able to overclock it to 850(stable, higher speeds on t-birds not quite as stable).
so...it comes down to 900-950 duron for 55$, or tbird 850 for 95$.
as fast as processors become obsolete, i will take the duron, and buy tbirds down the road when they become as cheap as durons now.
just my preference, cause i cry less when i burn up a duron processor....
LOL.
good luck and let us know how you make out.

I totally agree with the above post.
After overclocking, a Duron at 950, will perform nearly as good as a T-Bird at 850, sometimes faster in certain apps, then you've saved yourself $50, and you can spend that on your next upgrade.
I say go with the Tbird it's worth it for the few extra $ the larger cache makes a good diff in games and 3d apps plus you will be able to goto higher speeds. Right now I am running my Tbird 800@1.1gig havent tried to go higher figured I would burn it in good at this setting first. I dont c u getting this speed out of a Duron.

you will really only see a difference in benchmarks. Q3 is just as playable on a Duron as it is on a Tbird as the VidioCards are the current framerate bottle neck.

So you got your self a good T-Bird, not all of them overclock as well as yours. Rember some people like Proze have Duron 600's running at 1150MHZ.
It is still a fact that the T-Birds don't overclock as well as Durons, but of course there can always be exceptions.

Well if your goal is to make it to a Gig then a T-Bird is the way to go. If your cpu needs are modest and you want the most for the buck then go with the Duron.
