I plan on using a Super Orb on a T-Bird 1Ghz, and was wondering if a copper shim would be recommended. After hearing horror stories of people crushing their cores, I figured 18 bucks Canadian was a small price to pay to idiot proof my CPU.

Also it recommends that you apply thermal grease to both sides of the shim. I don’t see the point of this since the shim, doesn’t come between the heat sink and core. I was just going to put a little artic silver on the core, then clip on my orb, is this wrong?

If you are unfamiliar with the shim I refer to, it can be found here:

I'd get a Global Win FOP32 over the super orb, most people arent to enthused with the performance of them. The copper shim can pull some heat off the ceramic, I think there was just an article on the main page of the site about how they distrupt the normal cooling a little bit, not enough to worry about because they still protect the core much better.

Well you guys seem to like copper shims. I however do not like them. For one thing if you don't place the copper shim perfectly on the cpu it can kill it like what it did to me. I lost my 800 Tbird when installing the shim with a Z3 waterblock, now I just do fine without one.
