View Full Version : Password On Hd
hey i am using win xp pro and i wanna put a password on my shared drive and i cant do it
u could wit 98
????????:(
You can't do it in the same way that Win98 did it. Win98's way was real coarse, Winxp lets you create multiple users to access whatever you want and you can give them complex access privileges on whatever you are sharing. But if a Win9x machine is connecting it assumes guest account and only asks the user for a password to the guest account to use that resource.
And the guest account password in Winxp is system-wide, not on a per-share basis like Win9x.

yea like red said in winxp it allows you to give privileges to the users of ur choice. Other possible solutions are you could install a 3rd party program
GOT ANYGOOD SITES FOR SOME 3RD PARTY PROGRAMS

Actually thinking about it there are alternatives to 3rd party tools:
Alternate method there to password protect folders in Windows XP (without using third party tool):
Method 1: Use Compressed (Zipped) Folders in Windows XP with "Password Protection"

Method 2: Use NTFS Security permissions to protect a folder (prevent another user accessing it)

HOW TO: Set, View, Change, or Remove Special Permissions for Files and Folders in Windows XP

But i'll look for some 3rd party tools and post em :)
I had a HDD used by winXP and it was basicly all for one user.
After setting it in an other win XP computer I couldn't acces it anymore, not even after I created an acount with the same name and password.
Took me quite some time, patition magic and an old win98 computer to find out there was nothing worth saving on it.
There was probably an easier way but that worked too
