Hi, just wondering if you guys have some ideas on how to sound defend a desk for my computer to sit in? I was looking at sound defening material at a music store and its 25 a square foot.

So I was wondering what is a cheaper way that will look nice? Will carpet work you think with rubber on one side?

Thanks

If you want to google more information, 'sound proofing' will yield more results.

Anyway, you may want to look into a product called (I believe) Dynamat / Dyna-mat.

Carpet would probably work as well, with varying degrees of success.

I think there are two major areas you need to focus on to reduce noise:

1. Isolation. Vibration migrates through physical contact and creates noise in the environment as well. Simply placing your machine on rubber feet (if on a hard surface) could reduce some noise.

2. Absorbtion. Sound proofing material absorbs sound waves without resonating with them. The carpet you mentioned could work - you could probably get some cheap carpet for very little or even no cost from a carpet store. Just ask for some unusable remnants, explain what you're doing.

I'm not sure if this is what you mean but it helped me out on my last computer. Akasa makes a sound proofing called pax.mate that is a high density foam for inside the computer. It's usually about 15.00 US for a complete ATX case setup. You might be able to use it on a desk also. Just a thought, pretty much all online PC retailers sell it so a quick search for pax.mate should pull some sites up.
