I currently have a Pentium III 550e CuMine Slot 1 processor on a 440BX motherboard and I am thinking of buying a Slot A Athlon 1 Ghz on a KX133 chipset mobo. Which is better? My PIII has on-die cache, (256kb), and I know the Athlon Slot A has 512kb's of L2 cache! I wanna know ASAP, thanks!

quegyboe,

Since you're upgrading the mobo and processor, you should not bother with a Slot A chip. Socket A is the new chip package and you should get either an ABIT KT7 or an ASUS A7V in my opinion. Athlons run hotter than Intel chips so you'll probably want to get a better heat sink.. something like a Global Win FOP-32, 38 or better. Lapping the heatsink has been advised as well.

By the way, it's the Thunderbird Athlons with the 512 of cache.

Star,

No no, that's not what I mean. I can swap my current PIII with $100 CANADIAN for an Athlon! That's why I want to know if it is worth it...
