Do you need a shim or HS if you use a mobile chip in a desktop board? Or can you just drop it in and apply thermal paste?

you can just drop it in, and go. but depending on what cooler your using, you may not get contact with the core. i am setting up moble 1.8 c1 sys this week, and i am using the stock HSF for the job.;)

Do you think a Volcano 7+ will crack it?

i dont think it will crack it, i just am not sure if it will make contact. you will have to put as3 on the core, and then put the HSF on and then take it back off to see if it makes an imprint before starting the system. and then go into the bios before booting, to check what temps your getting before going into windows.;)

Yeah, what JD says - I have never got an aftermarket HSF to make contact with a mobile CPU on a desktop board, only the std Intel sink. If you have any joy with the volcano or others, let us know please....

The 7+ will NOT contact a mobile, but a waterblock will. And these chips O/C like nothing I've seen. Both of mine will hit over 200.

Yeah, I had a P4 mobile that did 222. I wonder where that one
went? LOL

The other one I actually sold and installed in a buddies laptop
(go figure), so I could afford a 2.4c
