I have alot of files on my computer that I can't burn off [ Don't own/can't afford that many CD-RWs ] but I don't want to delete either.
So I was looking at buying myself a large drive, like 200Gig or more. Since this isn't going to be the main harddrive, its just going to be a secondary one, Would I hit any type of performance loss if I, say, went cheap and bought a 5200RPM drive with a 2mb cache?
Or should I say atleast 7200RPM?
Also, what are some decent quality, but relitivly cheap HDDs that are around the 180-250GB size area?
If it's simply for filestorage, you shouldn't have any trouble out of a slower drive, but if you consider upgrading and eventually may use it as a primary you'll want the 7200. As to brand, I'd go Maxtor or WD for IDE drives.

I've got a 60gig that I'm using for the primary drive, I just need the " cold storage " for things like movie files, save games from games I've uninstalled and may want later, ect ect.
I won't be playing games or running any real software off the drive, altho i'd probably watch movie files off it. That wouldn't hinder the movies would it? the 5200RPM drive I mean
Shouldn't be any problems with that, DVDs run slower than that for data transfer purposes. Remember that redundant backups are good for anything crucial.

I don't plan to do any DVD backing up, I just have alot of crap on my HDD, in fact.. I have a less than a gig of space on my HDD AGAIN.
Unfortunately, that's a very familiar feeling.

how long are you going to let it sit there
are there any known problems with long long term storage of hdd's
besides the fact that they go obsolite
if its going to be a long long time mabey have a comptuer ( cheap one) with it so you can have something to read it

Tapes or DVDs sound better to me, for long-term storage. That, and they're more durable.

Yeah, but I don't have a DVD-RW nor a Tape drive., plus by the time I've bought all that and the media to record to I would have been able to buy two 250gig HDDs :D
