View Full Version : AMD TBIRD ABIT KT-7 RAID ISSUES

I recently built an AMD T-Bird 900 system for a neighbor accross the street with a 300W powersupply, an Abit KT-7 RAID, 256 MB PC 133 RAM, Elsa Erazor X2 Geforce 256 Card and Soundblaster Live Value, IBM ATA 100 30GB HD. ......anyways what is occuring is after the system has been left idle, and is taken out of idle state the mouse starts to move really slow and the sounds starts to become distorted and a process or function really starts to bogg down(games, word, excel etc.) I have the stock heatsink that comes with it, and when I run MBM 4.17 it shows the CPU temps at 39C idle and 47C underload, I am wondering is the CPU just getting too hot or not mounted on correctly? I have checked the PS/2 mouse and it works fine on all of my 3 other computers. I checked the MB for scratches and anything totally obvious(loose connectors etc) I checked the mother board manual an it is all ok. Where most issues occur with this VIA chipset board is the fast writes and AGP 4x mode, works fine with or without, just when the system is left idle and finally touched again, it slows down. takes about 20 minutes for this to occur. Is my power supply putting out enough juice, I think so after running UT and Quake III and even Half Life under high res at 1600x1200. Or are there other problems, I have kept the power management settings at default and under Energy saving features, everything is set to never to prevent potential lockups. Even system standby is off, cause it never works right anyways. I have reinstalled the OS and even discharged the CMOS and it still does this. Is there any other suggestion that you all can think of. So far I have no IRQ conflicts either. Or is there something that I am not aware of. Please tell me that I had made a mistake somewhere I am open to constructive critisim, well some sarcasim too. hehe. All help or pointers are truely appreciated. -Jeremiahs@mindspring.com

dear sir :
I know that a number of things can
cause what you have described.But
I think we can narrow it down to a few
possiblities....since you say you have
reinstalled o/s and checked cracks. I
continue in hope that this is all new
equipment you are using,otherwise no
telling what has caused hangup. If new
I can narrow it down to a few things.
1. faulty defective or scratched cd roms cause malfunctions regardless
of reinstallation, some defect not seen
with the naked eye.(try borrowing a
copy from somone and try again!!!)
2. Sometimes another party gets a
little curious to new equipment and a
pulled card or cable at a wrong time
will always cause invisable perman-
ent damage to circuitry.
3. I have sometimes had simillar and
identical problems when some of the
software is loaded in a precarious or
careless order. Carefull installation of
each driver and program along with
defragmenting of disk after each and
every install is a must. It never hurts to
restart after all installs even it does
not specify or recomend it.
4. Sometimes an operating system
when loaded first time on hd with a
realy fast processor accidents may
happen when o/s configures itself.
first try and check all conflicts in your
device manager, and if no conflicts(i.e
your video adapter/card is proper,..)
then you might have problem that has
conflicted in o/s installation. Only thing
to do then is try to install o/s when you
can lower cpu speed maybe to 800 or
8 volts...then o/s can configure proper.
then change back voltage when all
software is installed some reguire a
little time to update system registry
and to fast before this can "skip" the
necessary data needed to make a
fail proof installation!
5. last but not least if there has ever
been a time where someone has on
an occasion pushed a cdrom drive
door(tray) above its natural intake roll
speed (forced accidental) then an al-
most always will permanently damage
the equalibreium of the electronics of
the board. When the system has time
to set, the new voltage twist that has
been created will become in effect &
eventually your system will deteriorate.
like you said eventual total loss of all
response is seen after 20 minutes.I
have a system is same way after I
told my roomate to "shut" cdromdoor
one day and saw him more than kind-
of over push tray like an idiot and I had to slap him because I knew I was
looking at my whole new system go-
ing to total waste after that...my cdrw
would no longer record and email is
also faulty.
6. You might try to add a little silicon
heatsink compound if you havn't, but I
don't think heat is your problem. I can
tell you more if you email response to
me with what you have to say about my suggestions so far in relation to
your progress after read this. I think
your problem lies in your systems
time logic. A system may stay in one
mode and not function after idle.Part
might be due to a speed factor while
o/s was installed or the order of the
software installation.Sounds unlikley,
But I have found that installing all drivers, then software helps to prev-
ent software conflict at bootup as o/s
sometimes speeds up an installation
just to get you booted up fast with your
fancy new real-fast processor.Believe
me it happens all the time, and if your
drivers are mixed between programs
on the first part of your hd your going
to run into overread of all collected
information (miss data).
7. another thing I wouldn't rule out is
that if you have an odd memory stick,
the processor is so fast that system
could develope an bad effect to this
"different" item a glitch so to speak.
Good luck with this and email me &
I can come up with more possibilities!
You failed to mention which OS it is running. If it is Windows ME, there is a file for the SB Live that causes my system to run like POOP after about a day or so. The file is Devldrv16.exe:
Try Ctrl-Alt-Delete and see if it is running. If so, end task it. Problem goes away. Bad news? Unless this file is loaded, no 4 speaker support.
This happens on both of my AMD systems with Win ME. Pisses me off to the max!
I contacted Creative about it last week, they will be "looking in to it"
Hope I was any help at all...

hi,
Did u partition ur HDD ???
If not , i'm sure it's ur problem..
make it 3*10Go because windows98 can't
support 30Go in only 1 partition...
That's why ur system is very slow.
