This article describes Intel's description of the erratum in their new Itanic, er, Itanium 2 processor. Seems the things shut down for no reason.

The fix? SLOW IT DOWN! -- hahahahahahaha. They are ALREADY too slow, so let's really cripple them!

Oh, yeah--there will be NO recall. Replacements only upon request.

Itanium was a doomed processor from the begining, I say leave the server market to SUN.

Intel only spent 1 billion on IA64 so far (over 10 years in the making)....

This CPU will fly, even if Intel need to throw another 2 billion into it. That is a luxuray (virtually endless funding for R&D) Intel has that SUN does not. And for that reason alone the IA64 will make it.

only one way to find out, wait..

Also how much does intel spend on regular processors like the p4 or p3?

the p4 required much more money than the p3 since p3 was pretty much just an optimized p2 with SSE while the p4 is an entirely new style of architecture
