View Full Version : Newbie questions: voltage, heat - the usual

Boy, am I new at this: I sort of fell into overclocking on New Year's eve. A friend of mine tried to get 1g out of his Athlon 750 with an Innovatek GFD, but it wasn't stable at that speed. Since he's an all-or-nothing type, he gave the GFD to me in disgust.

So there I was, on the floor last night, cracking open my Athlon 650 (tremble, tremble) with a screwdriver. I got it to 750Mhz at 1.7v, and I'd like to go higher, if possible. The only problem is, my system wasn't designed with overclocking in mind and I'm a little nervous about exceeding the voltage maximums and venting excess heat.

My system is:

Athlon 650 Slot A .25m week 93
MSI 6167 mobo
256M PC100 memory
Midtower case
PS fan: exhaust, top of case
PCI slot fan: exhaust, middle of case below processor
Case fan: intake, bottom front
dual fans on the CPU heatsink
fan on Guillemot Xentor 32 video card

My mobo doesn't provide temp data, so I can only go by feel. (The next one will though :-D , coz this is fun!) Last night with the case open the CPU heatsink was hot enought to sting slightly, but not too hot to touch.

I wasn't planning on upgrading till later on this year, so I don't want to spend any $$ now, but I would like to explore this without frying my system. How high can I set the voltage safely? Are there any good rules of thumb for estimating heat output? I see a lot of utilities to test stability on the web; what's a good one? Should I even contemplate overclocking the FSB? How can I improve my airflow - make a duct to blow directly on the processor?

Sorry for bombarding you with so many questions, but the guides I've been looking at have been pretty vague on the details. Thanks for any help you can offer!

dude you really need to do two things

first go back to the main page and read the beginners guide to over clocking this will answer most of your questions!!!

next get your self a good fan/heat sink if the heat from your heatsink "stings a little" sounds like its to hot

take a look at this page as well
