View Full Version : Software CPU cooler for Duron?
Hi,
Has anyone found a software CPU cooler such as Rain, or Waterfall, that works on the Duron. I've had good luck with Software coolers in the past and am hoping there is one for the Duron.
Thanks,
Chris

Yes there is 2 ways of software cooling your chip, but the current line of thinking is against using them because:
1. They don't work at full CPU loading anyway, so your chip will still heat up and crash when playing games like Q3.
2. The thermal expansion/contraction from rapid heat changes is thought to place stresses internal to your CPU and cause a shortning of it's life.
So I will do you a favour and not tell you.
Unless you really beg me.

Pleeeeaaaaassse! I don't care about about trying to cool it when under load, but rather have it atleast cool down when I'm not using it. Right now it's running around 95-100 at idle, maybe goes up to 102 under 100% load.
Thanks!

Are you talking about 95-100 degrees Celcius? Because if you are! Damn that CPU is running hot, it should probably be dead by now. If you are talking 95-100 degrees Farenheight then OK. If your running 95-100 degrees Farenheight then your running cooler than I am, heh. I get an average of 104 (idle) to 115 (full load). Oh another thing, If you have an Asus AV7 check out your Asus Probe program it does have a Software Cooling thing already in it and its pretty much straight forward and easy to use.

Ok then, here goes.
The easiest way is to have BIOS ver1003 and then enable PCI Master Read Caching.
If you don't have ver1003, you need a hacked BIOS, of which you can get from here:

They are good BIOS's cause I've tried one before. Of course you can always learn to hack your own BIOS, but you can definately get into trouble with that so it's not recommended.
If you are insistant on using BIOS ver1004 or 1005, then there is a small program, you can download, to change setting in your BIOS registers whenever you want, or at startup, to enable this software cooling. This also works well as I have tried it.
As far as ASUS Probe goes, I don't think it has software cooling at all, I think it only has active variable fan speed, which doesn't work for me. Maybe my fan doesn't support that function.
