Maybe I missed something in the PC version of GTA3 but I couldnt do any drive-by shooting and I hope that it gets fixed (if it was broken) and works in the PC version of Vice City. GTA3 was still very enjoyable despite this frustration.

they did. 1600 x 1200 will all video settings maxed and is runs over 60 fps with the rig in my sig. with GTA3 this was no where near possible (with the same settings i couldn't keep it over 25 fps).
edit: to do drive-by's you have to look left or right then press the fire button, on the motor cycle's you can shoot straight ahead too.

Whats the gameplay like compared to the ps2 version. similar and how much better do the textures look etc...
some details to the drooling masses.....:D

there's a couple things that have better control on the PS2 version, the main things being the helicopter, Dodo & the tank. the textures are a lot sharper now. if you can run the resolution over 1024 x 768 then do it, the game looks really good at high resolutions. antialiasing doesn't seem to increase IQ but anistropic improves the IQ a little bit (not uncommon for a consol port).
(edit: oh yeah, this game feels like it was meant to use a mouse. i actually can't play the PS2 version anymore :D)

anyway, i have a restored faith in Rockstar now. after the terrible performance of GTA3 on PC i was very skepticle about GTA:VC but they pulled through :)
EDIT: i had the frame limiter on, with it turned off it never drops under 100fps @ 1600 x 1200 :eek: :cool:

Well thanks to this thread, I braved rush hour traffic BOTH WAYS and made it to a Fry's in Arlington.
I am now the proud owner of:

I read that they totally re-made it this time for pc. I was at the pc store in the mall earlier and i forgot to go the vid games store and buy it :( Now i have to call wal-mart and hope they have it.

I haven't even touched the PS2 version, as I couldn't STAND the controls for GTA3 on ps2, just not a fan of trying to aim with a joystick...

lol, at gameshack they had gta 3 for 29.99 (can), today when vice city came out they changed it to 44.99....
Just overcame an issue with my display device driver. I couldnt get past the initial movie without locking up (game is installed in first rig of my sig) until i rolled back the driver from the cat3.2 to 3.1. Game runs great with better graphical performance than GTA3. Motorcycles are cool!!

I have my deposit down and will be picking it up on Thursday at Best Buy. Dont ask me why I have to wait till Thursday, but I do. Evidentally games arent top priority at Best Buy, or we here in Wash. State get screwed on new releases:(

Woot! This game rocks!!! I picked my copy up at EB and I got this "EB Games exclusive GTA: VC skin disk". I just spent the last 4 and a half hours playing, and holy crap, it's a lot better than GTA 3.
It's a good thing Rockstar re-coded the game for the PC, rather than simply porting it straight from the PS2.
Man, I'm sitting here sweating. I've been sitting here for about 5 hours now, and my freaking computer has turned this room into an oven!
Awesome. I know that the original release date wasnt supposed to be till "summer 2003" so I dont feel too awefully bad about having to wait two extra days for my copy. It just sucks that unless I order online I have to wait a few extra days. Oh well, the reviews so far have been stellar :D .
Well i called wal-mart and it was only 40$ Too bad when i got there it was too late and they were closed(11:30), i swear ive been there at like 3:30am before though..

in the video options (in Vice City) you'll see the frame limiter, turn it off for higher framerates.

I've seen places that stated the official release date as the 13th, 14th, and the 15th, but most places have said it's the 14th.

ah neat, when i turn off frame limiter it becomes laggy and warps a little bit... with 4x quincunx antialiasing and 8x af on...... my gf3 ti200 is a lil slow at 30fps :(

Hoestly one of the most addictive games I've ever played should have waited for after finals before purchasing this thing is gonna seriously effect my GPA. Full settings with QuinQuax AA at 1024x768 far far better than GTA3. Also an unbelievable sound track. Also if you haven't seen Scarface the movie you have to before you play this game the value rises a great deal after watching that classic movie. That's all I have to say about that Mang.

The only way I could do it was with a joystick, and it was still tricky. Too many keys to press at one time using only the keyboard! Maybe remapping keys would help.

Yeah I was thinking about hooking my joystick up just for that mission. Its a PITA! :)
After failing it over and over with no chance i remembered i have a USB ps2 type controller and plugged it in. I found the controls for ps2 on gamefaqs and set it up like that and beat the mission so easily it's not even funny.

Much faster load times, and the ability to tweak cars as you see fit.

Yep: the game records everything you do for the previous 30 seconds. If you press F1, it'll show a replay of the last 30 seconds of gameplay (you can move the camera around and everything while watching it). If you hit F2, the game will save this replay to a file, so you can watch it over and over again. And, if you hit F3, the game will play your saved replay. It's a pretty cool feature.

BTW for those having problems with the toy helicopter + bombs mission towards the beginning of the game - practices makes perfect. Just fly around for a bit and get set in your ways, and then go for the highest (hardest) target first, then work your way down the building.

It's been a long wait. I'm getting this! Now we can see it's full graphical potential. :)
To do a drive-by you hold Q or E and press fire, you have to have a small machine gun.
I'm pretty sure i saw cheat codes on gamefaqs looking for something about that hellicopter thing but i tried not to look

When I'm driving through town, I always start to see UNLOADED TEXTURES!!!! Like everything will be very plain, roads might seem too low (like everything is floating above it), walls will be missing, etc. It takes about a minute, and THEN everything loads!
WHAT IS THIS!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!? :D
I need a patch already, or some kind of fix.
But besides that, the game is pretty cool! :D
Might be videocard issues. ATI is releasing a new driver set today.

I just picked the game up lastnight...then i got drunk.
So I started playing around with it after I awoke from my slumber this morn :D
So far it's sweet!!
I haven't even checked, but I hope we can dump our own mp3s in this game like we could in GTA3...I'll only be able to stand the 80s music for so long...

I had this too, and i tried like 5 different vid drivers.... apparrantly our systems are too fast for the games engine

i had this too, but mine loaded within seconds, not minutes, although when i drive through town in a very fast car without hitting anything, i only get half the textures... its weird...

i dont like this mission at all..... its so hard. ive tried it at least 10 times...... the controls are tough with the keyboard, im still practicing tho :p
Hehe, that RC controlled helicopter mission took me 3 tries. :) Once you get used to the controlls, it's a bree... oh who am I kiddng, it's still hard! I had to "redefine" the controlls though - 4 buttons for left hand (rotate left and right, and tilt forward and backward) and 4 buttons for my right hand (accend and decend, and bank left and bank right). Whew!
18% complete for me right now...
A lot of people are reporting that bug where the textures don't load fast enough. Most have reported that turning on the frame limiter fixes it, as you guys have already said, but that kind of sucks. It runs so nice and smooth with no limiter on...:(.
It's so easy it's not even funny with a regular gamepad. and it's so hard it's almost impossible with a keyboard.

the RC mission: fly the chopper to the top of the building and use the rotors to kill everyone in there, BEFORE YOU PICK UP THE FIRST BOMB. The timer doesnt start until you pick up a bomb, so with everyone dead its much easier to just fly around and place the bombs, without worrying about getting shot at or hit by men with hammers.

Where can I find a helicopter?
There is a police station on the north side of the second island that has one
on the roof. Just climb the stairs behind the building, go up the ramp, and
it's yours.
After you get package #80 you can always pick up a Sea Sparrow behind the
Diaz mansion. I like the Sea Sparrow best because you can change radio
stations, and it has a nice wide landing base.
Another good suggestion from Talen:
"When traveling over the bridge from prawn island to the downtown area
there is a TV Network building on the right. If you follow the guard
rail on the right side it ends in front of the TV station and there is
an open door just on the other side of the rail that will put you on top
of the station with their helicopter."

System Perf Report:
Athlon XP @ 10x166, 512 mb, Ti4200 64meg @ stock 250/500:
NO graphics problems whatsoever at 1024x768x32.
Looks like they really DID make use of the extra time, and clean up a lot of code.
Yep, 15 minutes and all I can say so far is that it runs sooo much smoother than GTAIII did. I got good framerates with GTAIII, but it still fealt as if it was stuttering. Of coarse, like I said I only gave it a 15 minute run so far too. Gotta take my kids to practice.

Anyone have an idea so that it stops changeing my speaker config from 5.1 to 4 or 2 speakers in my creative AudioHQ also I notice after I play it my screen never turns off for power managemnt those two issues are a little on the annoying side.

yeah i get this problem sometimes also especially when going over bridges, besides that no real problems, except for of the missions (ive never played this game before on PS2), what's with the RC type missions? oh well, anyways I've been wasting time doing a bunch of taxi missions instead of doing the dirty work.
btw... Ive heard that you can pick up HO's and such in this game how do you do that?
Just get a nice ride and pull up next to them, sometimes it takes awhile but sooner or later you will start seeing your life revive and the car starta rockin lol.

I started a new game last night, this time I'm going for a perfect 100% with no busts and no hospital visits. After pounding away at all the ambulance missions (got level 12 first try) and 100 taxi missions, I found something in a guide that might help someone else in the even of an emergency.
Remember, the ambulance missions made *me* smash the hell out of my keyboard in GTA3. Don't let that happen to you.
The third rule of flips is to unflip, which the ambulance can actually do
quite easily, if you've only flipped onto your side. Turn the wheels towards
the side the ambulance is flipped over on. If the roof is on the left, turn
left, and vice versa. Then hit reverse. If you're on level ground, the
ambulance will pop right back on its feet. This, ladies and gentlemen, is
ambulance magic, and it's one of the few really great things about this
vehicle.

The 100 health thing isn't true. I was just playing, and picked up a nice respectable woman, and for some odd reason decided to park behind a warehouse in an alley.
There was a lot of background noise and radio was on, but dude said something like "Say hello to Tommy."
Then the car started rocking, and health started going up. As the health increased towards 25, the tempo of the rocking increased. (What were they doing, Daddy? Wrestling?)
Shortly after 25, the tempo was really fast, then it stopped. Then dude said "Thank you, and THANK ME."
125 health. (I think they were doing calisthenics or something, what else would make you healthy like that?)

Man, I CANNOT GET PAST THE STUPID BOAT OR RC PLANE MISSIONS.
The Diaz mission where you're running to the yacht to pick up product, first come first serve, I always end up dying like, RIGHT AT THE END, at the dock. Boat takes too much damage and blows up.
And the stupid Miss Cleo wannabe (I think it really is her voice, haven't checked credits) where she gives you the mission to kill cubans by flying rc planes with bombs... Can't do it.

as for boat driving missions or w/e u want to call them, takes practice :o i find it real hard to drive it with the keyboard, it took me a couple times but i got it ;)

9 go forwards, 6 go backwards, 4 turns to the left, 5 turns to the right, right arrow key banks to the right and left arrow key banks to the left. When in the Voodoo hit 9,6,4,5 and end.

For the RC plane mission, use 9 and 6 to tilt your plane's nose up or down (once in the air of course). I did the mission with a single plane. :D [/bragging]. If you were good at flying the dodo in GTA 3, flying the RC planes is a lot easier.
for that hellicopter mission i could not even get close with the keyboard, i plugged in a controller and beat it easily with like 2 minutes to go. I thought the plane one was easy and used keyboard though, just dont crash the plane and it has unlimited bombs.

No no, the first half of the mission, you're actually driving the boat, trying to beat the others to the yacht. I can handle that fine, I win every time.
It's the second part I'm having problems with. On the return trip, you're riding shotgun basically, using the cheap automatic gun to shoot boats, helicopters, gunmen on docks, etc.
Every time we (Lance is driving) get to within 50 feet of the destination dock to drop off the 'product', the boat blows up.

Great game, runs awesome except in one place: the bank mission! When the swat teams drop in from the ceiling, the massive smoke effects cause the framerate to drop to less than 5...

i dont think there are... in GTA3 the only difference was you could change the people (i mean you could make a custom skin) and use your own MP3's not sure about vice city but i doubt there are many more things
Finally got GTA: VC today and installed it. I must say, I'm suitably impressed! Rockstar's trip to the proctologist paid off! No lag and it looks and plays well.
I just wish I could turn down teh gayness factor a few notches ;). Damn, the 80's suxx0red.

This game is definently way longer than GTA3. I could finish GTA3 in a day if I worked hard at it - today I played VC from 10:30am to 12:30am (yes, 14 hours) and I'm still nowhere near finished.
And someone needs to release a Vice City Admin Console that works like the GTA3 Admin Console. I'm ready to do my 4 hour viglante missions... :(

Also, does anybody know how to beat "Death Row"? It is the one where you have to save Lance. Everytime I play I get to Lance and then get out but when I get to the street Lance always gets run over. What is the trick?

Well, technically, at the moment, one could edit some files and create a Police (whatever) vehicle that weighed 25 tons, went from 0 to 220 kmh in 3 seconds, and blasted down the road at a top speed of 1990 kmh (like my Police Blista). Only problem is, it'd be like driving a stick of dynamite. Just ram it into something else - kaboom!

The voodoo is my fav car in this game so far. Only bad thing is if you hit the switch just right you can flip the car. One problem they have with the car is no wire rims and the car doesn't shine.

It's easy to lose the tail. You just need to drive not really fast, but accurate. The parking brake is your friend. As soon as you lose the guys chasing you, you're golden. Took me about 10 tries, but I finally got it :)
You can get an everything-proof Admiral near the beginning of the game.

It locked up hardcore, though. This was the lockup to end all lockups.

Crapped-out IDE cable and dirty burner lens
Of course Vice City still reads all audio from the play disc, so you can guess what pretty much happened. I'm now running an ATA33 cable on my secondary cahnnel (vomit) and a replacement CD reader. Dammit.
No matter though, it was only 20 or 30 minutes of play time, and I drive a modded FBI Rancher anyway.

Yeah, this game has messed up my whole sleeping pattern. And on top of that, whenever I do go to bed, I hear that "Thor" viking guy talking about pillaging and burning villages to the ground in my head. :(

You have to complete the missions associated with them. Behind the car dealer is a big pit with garages. Next to one of the garages is a list of cars to steal. After you finish one, a new one will show up. These are "extra credit" (there are 4 lists) and will get you some bonus cars as well as increase the maximum amount of $$$ the dealership will generate.
That being said, anyone know how to complete the ice cream "Distribution" mission? I'm guessing it's just to make LOTS of deals?

Yep, you have to do 50 deals in a single run.
Yes, the car dealership is the best asset property. Btw what you have to do to make money with the strip club is spend alot in one of the private rooms. Possibly the best prize in the game if you don't cheat though is if you complete the pizza delivery mission by delivering tons of pizzas till it says it's completed.

Body armor and ambulance missions. The body armor is available at the local Ammunation shops, I recommend that you always have a suit on. Then, finishing the Ambulance missions will give you infinite run, which is an extreme advantage in later missions.

is it possible to map the Esc key to my controller? I luv playing on sweet detail (this game is tight with AA on) but I wanna play from my bed. However, I dont seem to be able to find an esc key on my controller. Is it possible to maybe bind a button on my controller directly to the esc key?

I bought me some machine guns and wasted cops from the 2nd story until i had 5 and then 6 stars, then ran down and stole thier cars/tanks and saved in the dealership. my dealership now has 3 FBI ranchers, 2 tanks and all the reward cars. ph33r me police guys!
(sidenote: i bet this game would look a WHOLE lot better if i could bring myself to spring for a new vid-card :cry: )
to steal the tanks that chase you with 6 stars, you have to shoot the driver through the slit in the front, not too difficult with any of the machine guns, jsut make sure you get him before he gets you, haha

i managed to score wheelie points apparantely you can only score them on drag bikes not on sports bikes :(
to do a wheelie you simply accelerate and press down arrow key don't over do it or you will fall

you should be able to get wheelie points on any bike, its hard to do wheelies with the keyboard
Check the makers site. If not you can probably bind a mouse button to esc if it can reach long enough.
Yeah, you can get points doing wheelies on any bike, it just has to be longer than 6 seconds and the back of the bike can't touch the ground. Try doing some Stoppies with a Faggio.. hold both brakes and lean up.
I've done wheelies on all the bikes. Once you get going with the Faggio though, you're set!!

Both brakes are S and the down arrow? What is lean forward? W
I like keyboard/mouse much better, i just use gamepad for hellicopter. Lean up is the numpad 9 default. Both brakes is S and Space. A Faggio is one of those little scooters, they are all over ocean beach.

Anyway, I think you get unfettered (big word, huh? :D) access to one when you collect a LOT of the packages, but here's the cool way:
There's one sitting right in the back of the military base by the airport. You have two options:
1. Sneak in and grab it. 99% chance of failure if you mosey right in the front door. Go James Bond and land a chopper on the roof of the big building in the corner of the base, and gun all the soldiers down. Use some grenades to clear them all, then jump off and dart for the Apache before they respawn. After they respawn, turn around and mow down the new soldiers, hop in the chopper, and get rid of your now high wanted level.
2. Go to the police station near the Malibu club and put on the cop's uniform. I found this out AFTER I did the above tactic. Guess what? If you look like a cop you can walk right through the base and look the soldiers right in the eye. Take a stroll over to the chopper, and fly away!
There are two weapon systems on it: a machine gun (WHICH AUTOMATICALLY AIMS AT PEOPLE AND CARS!!!!! SWEET!!!!!!!!) and twin-firing missiles. Both are UNLIMITED!!!
Now for garaging it:
Fly it into the "pit" of the car dealership and, while flying, manuver the tail into one of the garages so the door stays open. Then get out and sprint against the chopper in whatever necessary directions to "push" it into the garage. Later, go into the garage and push it out for an afternoon on mayhem. Voila!

you have to get all 100 packages. theres another on the helipad near the ocean beach hospital if you reach 100% completion. if you just want to mess around with the apache, go here to get a 100% save game.

600 bucks... it takes about 10 minutes sitting in there. I suggest buying the car place first though if you want money. it's only like 10 g's more and you make tons of money doing the fun missions then it starts to generate tons of money after you do some of them.

I have to agree with the car dealership recommendation. 50,000 buys your way in, but by the time you do all the missions, you're sitting on about 100,000 or more, several SWEEEET static-spawned cars in the showroom, plus LOADS of garage space.

You have to complete the "Cop Land" Mission before the cop uniform becomes available. Its available inside the Police station on the east island (Ocean Beach??).

After you get access to the cop's uniform, it's in the police station right down the street from the Malibu. Walk into the building and there's a locker room to your left. After you walk into the locker room (or up the stairs to the office) you will immediately get a 2-star wanted level (the areas are marked in an "Authorized Personnel" kinda thing), so you need to get the uniform to lose it.

the strip club is 'the pole position club' hahah.
club malibu is on one of the main strips, can't miss it. it generates 10k a day. i also recommend the print works, which makes 8k a day. pole position is only 4k a day.
i'm only 30% done with the game but i already own malibu, pole position, cherry poppers ice cream (crappy), the print works, and the hymen condo. once you start getting the cash from malibu and print works ($18,000 a day) everything else is just childs play. i'm not even playing missions because i'm having too much fun owning the town and being a badass. i love to get the casual clothes, hop on a PCJ and just cruise around causing trouble and collecting cash. (and i said to myself, MARIO!)
and did anyone else catch the pun on the interglobal films island?

is there a certain mission i have to beat for the apache to appear? every time i get in a chopper i fly over the army base and its never there. also, where is the sea plane at, i can't find it anywhere.

I'm sure most of you who own or have visited the PP club noticed the two OTHER rooms in the back. After completing the $600 'investment tour' to get the PP to generate cash every day, one room turns into a quick scripted private dance with a lady in cowboy boots. (Ok, she's got a hat on too.) The other room does nothing.
This is making me wonder... The first room now has a different girl you can spend money on. I'm gonna try to let tommy spend money on her to see if it's possible to up the income level or something. I dunno, I just feel like there's something more there.

Jeff, you're probably looking at the helicopter landing pad at the army base..thats NOT where the apache is. The apache is in the very back (north) of the base, near some barracks.

Actually, I just turned the monitor off and watched some TV. When I came back, I had the club.
The Apache is in the millitary base. It's easy to get. Grab the cop outfit from the VCPD, and hop in a chopper. Fly in the direction of the airport, over the airport, and to the back of the base. Land the chopper, and hop in the Apache :D

I've tried and tried and tried to get the Apache to spawn, and I just can't. I've flown near the base, left, come back (repeat umpty ump times.)
I've done it in vehicles. I haven't done it on foot b/c, well, SCREW THAT, hahaha... but still.
I'll try one more time, and if I can't get the friggin' thing to spawn, then TO HECK WITH IT SAR.

AFAIK, the apache only appears at the army base after youve collected 100 hidden packages, and appears at the beach house near the marina after 100 pacakages and completion of the "keep your friends close" mission

anyone know if there is a way (some type of hack maybe?) to change the directory it looks for MP3's in? i dont wanna move mine :(

Since you have XP just copy your MP3's to the MP3 folder.

All I have left is Check Point Charlies, the Film Studio Missions, and the Phil Cassidy Missions. I cannot beat Gun Runner. It is impossible. How am I suppose to beat it?
I go down and knock off two trucks. I get out to get the guns. Then I am bombarded by a never ending line of guys on bikes.

I had very few packages, yet the Apache was right there waiting for me. :D
And I think you can make shortcuts to your MP3 in the MP3 folder and it will work. I'll try it.

Just create shortcuts in the MP3 directory for Vice City. That's what I do.

Damnit! I beat the game about 10 days ago, so now I'm doing all of the side missions. I've completed the pizza and vigilante...uh...tasks...and now I'm doing the Paramedic one. I was at level 10 when this freaking idiot jogged into my back tire while I was comming to a stop..."mission failed". F***ING SH**!!!!!!! :mad: GRRRRRR!!! :mad: ROARRRRRRR!!!!!!!! :mad: :mad: :mad:

Brown Thunder: (Vigilante mode in the Apache :D) Max armor boost to 150
Pizza Delivery: Max health boost to 150
Ambulance: I heard it was infinite sprinting ability

About that rc heli mission... don't pick up a bomb, just go explore the building, ALL of it. Men with wrenches will attack your chopper, kill them by flying into them. There are also like, 2 security guards with guns, kill them too.
If you kill them all, then the rest of the mission is EASY.
Timer doesn't start until you place a bomb I think, although it *might* start when you pick one up.

I have maybe 25 packages. I already completed the stupid vigilante missions by using a jacked up cop car to get to places, then shooting up the crooks' cars with the chain gun. (MUHUHAHAHA :))
I *STILL* want that stupid apache, but it's *NEVER* at the base when I go, not anywhere on the base.

i think there must be a certain percentage of the game or a certain mission that you have to beat to make the apache appear...because every time i fly over it its never there, just like you say inthrees.

yeah, i know where its SUPPOSED to be lol, i watched my friend jack it on PS2 one time, but its still never there. maybe thats another one of the annoying bugs that are plaguing pc gamers .

Yeah, I just finished the Ambulence mission. You're right, unlimited sprinted ability. The vigilante mission in a cop car gave me 150 armor.

one more question in pizza delivery missions i am supposed to "throw" the pizza i have literally tried every button on keyboard and on my joypad but can't throw the pizza :(

You press Q or E to look to the right or left side and then you use the mouse button.
Hey guys I'm not about to read this whole thread so if this has been discussed already sorry. The game performs great. At 1024x768 it never drops below 70fps and stays over 100 on the rig in my sig usually. Except when certain effects kick in. Those being the water splash effect like when you drive a car into the drink or look at the fountain. And smoke/dust effects like when you fly one of the RC helicopters close to the ground. FPS drops to like 10, it other words the game totally chokes until the effect is gone then it gets silky smooth again. Does this happen to anybody else?
I am using the 43.51 drivers and it happened with the 41.09 and 44.03 drivers too.
