View Full Version : Thunderbird Die Color
I forget, which color cpu die is the NEW thunderbird revision--green or blue...
I know all the 1.1's are of the new core revision, but I was thinking of getting a 1gig because of the price, and I was to get some acceptable overclocking results...
any info would help...thanks

It's not really a new core revision. The core color is applied by the fabrication plant and diferentiates where your cpu was made. Dresden Fab uses blue. All Dresden fabbed thunderbirds use copper interconnects rather than aluminum, this is better for overclocking. Austin fab units are green and are always aluminum interconnects. Durons come in blue but are NOT copper interconnected, they're just made in dresden. So all in all, you want a blue chip not a green one if your buying a tbird, but chips slower than about 900 almost never come with a blue core, above 1ghz they should ALL be blue, copper interconnects are almost required to hit speeds above 1ghz.

i heard that the copper interconnects were just a myth

Its the truth, thats why tbirds run at 1.2 GHZ and Pentiums don't...well its not the only reason but its one of them...the new P4s run at 1.4/1.5 but thats by virtue of their shortened instruction pipeline. It's also been long documented that green tbird 950s cant touch blue ones in overclockability.
I knew about the copper interconnects from the Destrehan fab, but I didn't know which color was which...
Anyway, Thanks to everyone that posted a reply

BLUE
you want BLUE
thats Dresden
but any t bird 950 and abouve made after june of 2000 has copper interconnects
no matter the color of the core or where its made
after then there ALL copper
950's and above that is
but if you find a blue core no matter when its made then its copper
