Was redoing my watercooling and tightened my holddown too much. Cracked my CPU chip.

Computer wouldn't boot up and I didn't hear the "snap" of it breaking until I tried to turn it on. Do you think it killed the motherboard too? It's the gigabyte 7zxe.

Friend of mine is giving me a 700mhz Duron and I'll test the motherboard with that.

Fixing to :)

One thing I did learn is how to clean up the residue from Asilver.

I got too much on my chip at one time and when I tried to wipe it off, it turned the chip silverish. I tried acetone and denatured alchohol to clean it off, no luck.

I went and bought some cheapy radio shack heat sink compound (comes in a plastic tube now) and was spreading some of that on the chip. I was rubbing it around on the chip, trying to get it into the crevices so the AS wouldn't conduct and noticed that the silverish color was coming off. I put a big gob of the RS junk on and rubbed it around with my finger then wiped it off with a rag. It took ALL of the AS off the chip.

The reason I was redoing watercooling was I thought I had shorted something out or had a leak I couldn't see. Computer would crash at odd times and I would have to reset it. I had probably slightly cracked the chip, not enough to kill it but enough to cause crashing.

Wasn't until I remounted it this time and tried to turn it on that it "snapped" like an electrical short. The sound made my blood run cold... and even colder when I realised that the monitor wasn't coming on.

I'm going to get a 1700 or higher from the classifieds.... or buy one from newegg. I haven't decided yet. I don't want to have to wait for someone to receive my MO then mail me the chip, I think I'd rather order from newegg and get it in just a couple days via fedex.

Dish detergent removes Arctic silver very well, then I use acetone to remove the residue.

Go Intel lol this won't happen easily on an Intel chip because they have a protective piece of metal over the cpu

isnt that

protective piece of metal over the cpu

designed as a heat spreder ?

yes the heat spreader... you can also go to intel and you wont have the problem of paying less money or easily unlocking your chip to achive a better overclock.. er... wait a second...

Ordered the 1700+XP chip from Newegg for $43 shipped. AXDA1700
Supposed to be able to get some decent overclocks with this chip, I'll see how it does on my GA-7ZXE board.
