i have a cable modem hooked up to a router and there it splits down to 3 computers.. now the problem is that at any random time the internet will just like stop working.. but msn messenger or kazaa or whatever is open at the time will keep on working.. i just cant open any new sites.. even some sites work if i was surfing the site at the time.. but if i open up a new web page it wont work anymore.. i have to reset the router or wait for a while for the internet to 'come back'..
is my router dying? or is it something with the settings that somehow got screwed(although i didnt do anything with them...)

all started about a month ago so i know the symptons quite well

Is your router set to DHCP server? Are you running static internal IPs?

haha.. i have no clue what you just said :)

static internal ip's? what u mean? within router? no..
i did set ip, subnet mask, gateway and dns address to static in my network places but that was when this was already happening and i was hoping that would fix it but it didnt, at least it fixed so that all my computers would always have same ip so i wouldnt havta change the ip address of the forwarded ports each time i reset the router

Is your router set up to be a DHCP server? (Hmmm...I have to find out what this means again...It's been a while since I went into depth about this...I'll get back to you on that question...)
What router do you have BTW?

DHCP server is when the router assigns IP's to the computers that are powered up "I think:p, anyway if someone knowsd I'm wrong, by all means correct me ;)"

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol...
it will automatically assign IP address to a computer that will be connected to the network (methinks :p )...

Hahahaha...I got brain dead last night and the three of us are still unsure...
Anyway, to get back to your problem...I'm stuck. It shouldn't be doing that...Have you tried netgear tech support and see what they might tell you?

i had the same problem a while back using emule and what i found out is that if was flooding the router w/ requests. By adjusting the max sources per file to a lower number and lowering the # of request per 20 secs fixed the problem. Not really sure though if you have all those options on kazaa or not, but i think you can lower the sources per file. Another thing you could try is lower the MTU's on the router.

hey.. whats the MTU?
and this internet thing happens when kazaa is off as well.. so yeah

and ill try netgear tech support now too
