Alright, i just bought a Asus GeForce fx 5200, I used the new detonator FX driver, and had the old Asus Magic v9520 43.45 driver. My benchmark score was 900. my core/mem is 250/333. Im not that good at computers, but I would really appreciate any help that I can get right now.

Whenever I play games, Counter-Strike and Ragnarok, either I freeze, and its not server lag, or I get weird blocks of color. Remember nintendo, when you put the game in, and you get the weird color blocks all over, and you see nothing but blocks. Thats what I would get at times. And when i boot up my pc, I got grey lines, and weird color blocks, just now I had to turn it off and on like five times, until it finally showed me a normal screen. But basically i got that gray lines, and weird color blocks all over, just from booting up. It is really starting to ****** me off. Sad part is, I exchanged the video card for a new one (same model) and the memory too. And Im still getting problems... Please any help would be appreciated. IM getting desperate. Please help. and i just got this pc like two weeks ago.

Specs of Pc:
Amd Ahtlon XP 2600+ @ ~2.1ghz
512 MB of ram
80 gig hd western digital
Asus A7V8X Motherboard
Sound Blaster Audigy MP3+

Thats all i can think of right now. So please try to help, just playing games i get freezing, and color blotches.

Ok i typed enough. thank you!

You could always try Nvidia's latest drivers for the GfFx which can be found here http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=winxp-2k_44.03 maybe someone else has some more ideas :).

Ummm, i already did that... I used the new detonator FX driver, and had the old Asus Magic v9520 43.45 driver.

And no luck, the only other thing i noticed, is that my friend has the same exact pc and has NO problems whatsoever, but i couldn't figure out why, till i found out he never installed direct x9.0. But i want direct x9.0, and even when i uninstalled direct x9.0 (using an uninstaller, which extracts 8.1 from xp), and have 8.1 like he does, i still have the same problems.

How hot does the heatsink/fan get? Heat might be the problem.

Umm mind telling me how i can find that out?! As I said, im not that good at pc's, but I can get by.. I don't know much hardware stuff. So how could i tell how hot its gtting? i mean i got three fans on the pc, not including the CPU's and the Power Supply Units Fans... which is five all together. Its a 400W PSU also. But how could i tell?

Some cards have internal sensors.

But try just touching the fan on your graphics card. If it hurts, you have a problem. If its warm, your prolly fine. And if its cool, then heat is not an issue.

Wait a minute tho. The FX 5200 doesn't have a fan... Thats why. It uses passive cooling, and your prolly dont have a fan blowing on it. A short soloution is to just run with the case off.

Prolink, PNY, Asus, and Chaintech all have fans.

So yours indeed does have a fan.

Ok, well what happens if i switch my 5200 fx, to a ti something? i mean the only thing i know the 5200 does is, it supports direct x9.0a, and i dont' play games or do anything that really needs that, i don't htink so atleast.

But the guy said he's gonna now change the motherboard :(
I've been reading that the fx series, is crap, maybe I hsould just exchange it if i can.

I have three fans blowing inside my pc... so i mean, i don't think its a cooling issue

Then go ahead and get a new card.
Any TI card would be better than that.

Execpt the geforce2 TI

yea? you think that would be best to do? well he said he's gonna change the motherboard for me... what are the chances that is the problem? I actually have a pic of what happens during a game, when i reach my friend, i'll have him host it, and then i'll show you the pic of the game, and maybe you can tell me what it could be? Maybe instead of exchanging the motherboard i can get the ti, can you tell me what is good? what manufacturer? and what model? Without going too expensive...

I wanted ATI, but they dont' seem like they have it in stock...

Ok ok, i got the pic, this is the WORSE its ever been, other than not booting up properly, or the monitor not displaying at boot time, this is the game, and this is the worse its gotten, as i said, he replaced memory and video card (same model) so maybe its the mobo? regardless, im still probably gonna change video cards, but b4 i spend money, what do you REALLY think the problem is?

here's what its SUPPOSE to look like:

I'd be more concerned about having some air blow directly onto the card to move the heat off faster. That screenshot looks like some nasty MASSIVE artifacting that usually comes from the card being too hot. On normal video cards they have a fan directly on the heatsink so it blows the hot air away. Letting the heatsink draw out more heat.

Also, since you have an ASUS motherboard, it should have come with a program called Asus PC Probe that tells you the temperature of your CPU and other temps. You might want to load that up and see how hot your computer is getting inside (usually called Ambient temp). You also might want to consider having another fan or two to Exhaust the air from your computer. You mentioned that you had 3 fans blowing in, if you only have the PSU (PowerSupply Unit) fan exhausting the air, then your computer might be pretty warm inside. That could really screw with the passive heatsink on the FX Card.

You could also take the side off the computer and use a table fan (maybe 8inch diameter) and face it onto the motherboard. That is if you don't care about noise.

A good way to test if it is your motherboard is to try out another video card. Maybe your friend could bring his computer over and you guys can swap cards. He can see if your card screws up in his, and you can see if his screws up in yours. If his screws up in yours, then it might just be the motherboard.

well i asked him that and he's worried something will happen

Umm if i did change to a ti series, do they have fans right on the card? How are their cards? compared to fX? other than the face that fx supports direct x9.0.

And i did have asus probe on my pc BEFORE i reinstalled xp.. and whenever i checked it, it said all temps are normal.
But i'll reinstall to seewhat happens. AS i said, this is the worse its gotten but alot ofproblems happen even during bootup

If my pc was shutdown the whole night, and i turn it on the in the morning, i get grey lines, and the XP Login the bottom was white, not dark blue, and it just wasnt' right. So if the vid card was off all night, why would it do that? Can it still be really warmed up and not work right like that?

Anything else i can try? As i said my friend won't let me do that :(
maybe i can borrow my other friend's TI, and see what happenst here, but as i said before, this doesn'thappen often, just randomly.

Yes all Ti 4x00 (4200, 4400, 4600) cards come with Fans installed on them. As for how they stack up against the FX cards, they actually beat them. But I have a feeling that the newer games coming in the next couple of years will really utilize the FX cards' potential and begin to pull away. But we'll see.

If the card is messed up even after being off all night, ya got me there. :(

Your friend needs to stop being a baby and help you out.

KouRaGe

Well, he isn't a baby, just doesn't know much and thinks somehow it'll be corrupt, but he told me that his pc has a hardtime booting up in the morning. He's convinced the pc doesn't want to wake up that early and he just waits itll later in teh day........

Well I don't know what to do, I am hopefully getting a job soon and just might buy a whole new video card, (Radeon like i wanted in the FIRST PLACE) my friend for some reason thought fx was better...... whatever

My other friend though, is gonna let me borrow his ti 4200, so he's cool with it! i'll try that out for now

Cool, maybe your other friend could also try your FX in his computer? That way it's easier to narrow down the culprit.

Also, I'm not sure with your motherboard, but you might look into raising the AGP voltage through your BIOS, but just a little bit. Where it is in the BIOS, I'd guess it would be wherever the Frequency and Voltages are controlled.

well he has a geforce fx 5200, by MSI, (he bought one to try it out) umm he said the ti 4200 is more powerful.

As for the problems, im not too sure about it, he hasn't really said anything, he hasn't complained. I figured i couldnt' really compare b/c his is MSI and mine is ASUS.

How would i know is a little bit for the increase of AGP voltage?
Well im gonan wait, the guy is gonna exchange my mobo tomorrow, so we'll see then :-\
