Ok, I did my first overclock today, as it may be minute compared to most people but it's my first. :) I got my 2800+ Barton to 2250 mhz and I feel all warm and fuzy. Whle doing this in small increments I noticed my CPU temp wasn't changing, does the temp only change when I put more Vcore on? Also now that it is overclocked a little what things should I look for besides obvious crashes. How should I test it so far. I am goign to run 3dmark03 right after this to see my score compared to before.

Oh yea... I'm hooked now, I'ts all over for the stock parts in my case...:)

no the temp definatly changes when you increase the speed. are you sure your monitoring the right temp read-out?

The bios temp, this show on idle at startup, does the temp after overclock only really change while in load? It did go up like 1 or 2 degrees but thats it in idle though.

yeah the difference is much great under load. use a program such is motherboard monitor or speedfan to monitor the temps during windows

The temp does change only a little bit when overclocking w/o changing the vcore, so the 1-2C difference can be considered as an increase. Also best way to test the CPU and memory for stability is Prime95, go to www.google.com and do a search for it, after you install, run it and in Options menu select torture test. if you want 99.9% stability guaranteed run it for 24 hours, if you run it for a week then you are pretty much 100% stable.

What settings did you change to get this OC? The FSB or multiplier, or maybe both?

the thing for me has always been...test for stability (as long as I can stand it :D)...although if you would like to test for stability and have some fun...I would suggest running Tribes 2 during the times you wanna actively mess with your computer then.....when you go to bed or pick a designated time not to use your computer...I would then use prime95......thats just my suoggestion...as I have done tons of stress tests(sandra and prime over and over again ) and none are really that fun.....:D

Ok I did some idle/load checking. Just sitting in windows reading this forum it's at 37-38 and while I was running 3dmark03 it was 44-46 at least when I could see it during the flash between the tests. I'll try the Prime one also. That ok for temps and how high should temps be before I worry?

I'd say you're safe now, but I wouldn't go further if the temp reaches 50C or more...

I'm in the proccess of building a water cooling kit so I'll wait to go higher untill then. Thanks.

I find that for CPU clocked cloce to max frequency of a given silicon process on AIR, e.g. Tbred B 1700+ DLT3C to 2.4-2.5 GHz, Barton to 2.2-2.3 GHz, and assuming having good case ventilation, for a given Vcore, the temperature difference between idle (system kernel, background utility programs, ... are running) to full load (e.g. Prime95), can be as high as 6-10 C (take 8 C as av). Meaning that 8 C temperature represents the active power is consumed by the CPU to do the intensive computations.

When you raise the Vcore at high oc, the idle temperature will also rise due to increase in leakage current (even not doing heavy computations).

Yes The Coolest, I raised both. I went from a 12.5x Multi to 13x and from 167 FSB to 180.
