you know the story,
Iam new at this and need help!
well it's true and I have been studying this site for a week or so and finally got the nerve to try and overclock my first home built computer. And I cant get it to run stable over 856,it seems it should go much higher..shouldn't it ?

My questions are in my bios I have an option of voltage and freq, this is where I tried to o/c,and just wondering if my setting seem ok or should I change something

cpu vio - was 3.3 I took it to 3.45

cpu vcore select- was at 1.75 took to 1.80

auto detect dimm/pci clock- ? should this be enabled or disabled,I tried both and did not notice much differance

spread spectrum modulated- ? enable/disable,iam not sure where this should be but it is disabled now

cpu host/pci clock- this was set at default but now I have it at105/34mhz or 107/36mhz I cant remember

my m.b. is a msi KT7 pro (6330),with an athlon 800 tm
I have 384 m.b. of pc-133,maxtor 20gig 7200,anilator 2 gts w/32m.b. running windows me.
I have read my manual(studying it )but it does not go into detail about anything, please help and thanks in advance for talking the time to read my Newbie gibberish,I hope I ask'd the right question's....linedog

Did you close the L1 bridge on the T-bird.???

A few thing's you can try to do. First is to reset your bios to original. In your motherboard manual look up on a section that talks about for how to reset your bios setting original.

Another think you could do is buy a better heatsink fan for your cpu..plus buy some case fan as well 2 or more would do. www.3dfxcool.com will give some goods fan's to chose from and check out http://www.coolerguys.com they have alot too.

another thing you want to check is your memory brand type..micron, nec, samsung, toshiba, hitachi. PC133 CAS 2 is good for overclocking and CAS 3 too as well but CAS 2 is more used.

Since you have an 800mhz t-bird. try increase the multiplier first but leave the FSB the same. and leave the core at 3.3 and leave the cpu vcore at 1.70 only time when you want to increase the cpu vcore is when the cpu is not getting enough juice. but get to carried away with bumping it up to high other wise it's crispy critter for your cpu. run a few test to see if it is stable. run some stress test to see if your cpu at higher clock speed would crash or lock up.. to determind if it's up to the job.

Sorry to disappoint you, but the MSI KT7 Pro doesn't allow you to change the mutliplier. You'll have to stick to ocing by the fsb, in which case you probably won't get higher than 110 fsb = 880MHz as the KT133 chipset won't go much higher. As you're already at 107MHz (107x8=856), this may well be the limit for your board, and could in itself be the reason for the system instability. Better cooling on the tbird may help you get higher, but I suspect the problem is the chipset on the mobo itself - in which case better cooling on this might get you an extra few MHz (to 109/110MHz fsb), but it's probably not worth it.

Your only option is to change the multiplier on the chip itself - this is quite involved and complicated. While it is quite easy to do, it'll be fairly time-consuming as you can see in the guide at Tom's hardware: http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/00q3/000711/index.html

Here's an article on oc.com's motherboards section explaining the different MSI versions: http://www.overclockers.com./tips253/

Iam not opposed to buying a new motherboard,I need to build a computer for my boy's anyway and I could put the msi in the computer for them.So witch mother board do you recommend, abit?asus? is there another.Iam a little nervous about taking an electric engraver to my possessor(although Iam sure that to will come to pass..haha)I feel more conferrable playing in the bios.is this possible or do I need to invest in some tool's and start operating on my processor, thank's for the reply's...Linedog

I went and checked out the tom's hardware website that was pointed out,so basicly I need a silver pen to close with and a eltronic engraver to open with,is this correct?also it show's setting's for each speed,am I supposed to just pick a speed and start opening and closing bridges. Also iam not sure if this is a t-bird or just a socket-a athlon(are all socket-a's t-bird's) windows say's it's a athlon (tm)what would be a safe speed 950-1000mhz?also what is a fair temp I have 2 case fan's and the bigest heatsink and fan they had at my local computer store 3 month's ago.

ok guys iam back up...wow that one cost me a few buck's,Iam not sure what went wrong,I went and got an engraver to open bridges,(that's alot harder then it seem's) then closed the one's that where nessary, fired it up and system would not bootup it just powered up as soon as it was pluged in and stayed up.any way I went down to the computer store and got a new athlon 900 and they upgraded my board to a msi k7t pro 2-a( they do not carry abit boards yet.But maybe I missunderstood did I need to open bridges and close some or just close the L1 & L7's,I am going to build a computer just for tweeking on,my wife was pissed!I told her I had to up grade the videocard as well hercules gts pro 64mb,do you guys think the ultra is worth the extra money?sorry for jumping all over on diffrent subjects but iam all hooped up on cold med's...talk to you soon....linedog
