Hehe, I just noticed that you are from Counceltucky. I live right across the river in Omaha. Good to see other people from the area on the forums.

If you simply want a small directional antenna, a Yagi or a small planar/patch antenna will do the job nicely. Various models will provide different range/focus (beam width). You can get these from most places that sell the wireless base units. For example: D-link wireless & accessories (http://www.dlink.com/products/wireless/index.asp) is one such place.
If you really need an omnidirectional antenna, then look to models that are designed for that. They do not look like a Pringles can, but look like a standard whip or pole antenna.
The first step is to determine where your antenna will be installed and the area it needs to cover. You may find an omnidirectional best fits your needs.

However, even better are the tin can waveguide antennas. I made one in 2 minutes flat that got 14db of gain (just a quick test with netstumbler). lol- I even made one with some cardboard and tinfoil.
You can get some good deals on omnis off ebay also.

I originally did the tin can thing for cost reasons, however I recently broke down and got an omni. I got a 7db one for 49 shipped. Its no 10dollar pringles antenna, but its much more convineient.
Problem with directional antenas is that they are VERY directional. You will need to have it perfectly still on a tripod to get it to work at all. I suppose its fine if you just need a single point to point connection, but most of the time I use wireless, its for moblie use- hence directial antenas = almost useless.

I brought one from ebay but i emailed them and asked if i can get it for a flat rate and not bother bidding. They agreed and i received my can antennas. I was about to make one myself, but cost to buy everything lead to alot. Since it was hard to find the connectors in my area i had to order it online which i had to pay shipping to so i passed and brought myself one.
