View Full Version : Covering the L1 bridges

I have been reading that people are coveing the pencil filled L1 bridges with a sticker. I understand that it's to maintain the graphite in the bridges, but I'm just not convinced that it's a good idea. Any thoughts on this?

there shouldn't be a problem. i've seen coppermine p3's up at 60c (very unhealthy, no?) with warranty stickers on the bottom. if you can draw pencil on it, and it doesnt burn up, then a sticker is fine. make sure its a small one, that isnt a cheesy POS.

There are four L1 bridges, and they all need to be closed to free the mutliplier.

I never tried the pencil or conductive pen so I can't really compare. I hear many instances where the pencil will not be 100% and you will not be able to OC as high as you could with the defrost kit or the pen. Some say they get stuck at on multiplier setting with the pencil and then they use a pen and they can get higher multiplier setting. I have read a lot about it and it makes since. There is also different lead types in pencils that do not have enough graphite in them to conduct the right resistance. $10 and you can unlock a dozen chips with the defrost kit. I would also recommend getting a magnify glass as well. That stuff is kinda hard to apply on a small bridge like that and you can connect the wrong ones pretty easily.
Check this site out if you have not done this before.

I used some 26gauge wire with about 5 of the strands twisted together. That stuff would keep drying before I could get it in place, I then just blotted all of them together and took a razor blade to clean between the bridge sets. If that makes since.

i have a thunderbird 700 ... how can you check to see if the multiplier is locked? i have not covered the bridges, and can boot with 7, 7.5, and 8 as the multiplier on the 100mhz fsb

First of all what is the motherboard you are using? If you have a A7V and set the multiplier with the dipswitches while the JEN jumper is in softbios mode it dosn't matter what the multiplier is set to because the bios is controling it.
The easiest way to tell is to take the CPU out and look at the L1 bridges, if they are closed it is unlocked, if it is open it is not locked. If it is penciled in it will be hard to notice but any other method will be obvious. If you start up your computer with the multiplier at a differnt setting you can download Sandra SiSSoft 2001 and check it through that program also.
