At last - done the volt mod!!! Before I go any further, I just want to say thanks to Eriksson, Deviant and Azz in particular - and everyone else who helped. Here's what I did in the end:

See my earlier post for details of my cock-up - here's how I fixed it: I desoldered the resistor I had in place, removing all the solder that was there. I then added a 22k potentiometer and a 2k resistor in series (couldn't find a 24k potentiometer), and this time I soldered it properly. I found the solder wouldn't just flow into place, so I used the tip of the soldering iron to tease it into place. Then everything worked perfectly :-) Turns out I don't need the variable resistor, cos I'm using it on the max setting now (24k total), and getting 2.2V with voltage set to 1.75 in bios. As the mod has worked perfectly with the proper resistor value, losing the capacitor obviously didn't affect the voltage, it was just for cleaning the voltage - you were right Deviant ;-)

Right, so I'm now running at 2.2V, with a max temperature of 40C (I guess ambient at 20C). 1000MHz!!! I haven't tried higher yet, but it would very nearly do 1000 at 2.14V, so I reckon I should be able to get a few more MHz out of it ;-) I'll let you all know how it goes. Here's some benchmark pics of my system now - I'm quite pleased with them:

what bios you running
your scores are way low

1005b - I know they're low, but they're the highest I've ever had them :-( I think it's something to do with my crappy ram, or maybe because the Via 4in1's don't seem to install properly. I've spent ages trying to work it out and just gave up in the end.

Your low scores arent a bios issue! Just look how much trash you have in your system tray! All that cool icons are eating a LOT of resourses!!! Try again disabling all progs (leave only explorer & systray) after a fresh boot and you will see the improvements. What do u need now is tweaking!!!

go back to 1004D

on all the 1005's you cant get the optimal performance setting to stay on and that KILLS performance

nice, rob.

man, i have to get the balls to do this mod. i know i'll get 1200 with 0.2v more to play with!

how delicate is the power-riser board? can it take a bit of punishment heat-wise without damage?

It can take quite a bit of punishment - as I said, I had to use the soldering iron tip to tease the molten solder into position. This basically involved 'spreading' it over the smd components I was soldering to! Even after being covered in molten solder and held next to a HOT soldering iron for a minute or two (the tip wasn't quite hot enough so it took ages to melt the solder), they still worked! I was surprised - I think the biggest risk is desoldering the smd components, but that happened because my hand was shaking while I was soldering - so the wire attached to the smd capacitor, and then my shaking hand pulled the smd out of place. Then in my rush to bend it back I pulled it off! It's much easier to bend the wires so you can solder them without holding them - hook them over a nearby capacitor or something ;-)

I'd feel much more confident doing it again. If you want to, just hold the soldering iron and the wire next to the board without any solder, then power up the computer again, just to convince yourself it can take the heat and still work :-)

It's easy enough to do with some good equipment. Big chunky soldering irons will make it harder. Ive done a couple, but would still be nervous until I see the boot screen after the mod.
Proze, you can't deny the fact that the extra voltage is just calling out to you. You know you want to, and so do we, you either need some more confidence or a red hot pocker up the jacksey to get you moving with it!!!

2 boards and the voltage mod later i am running 1331 mhz

i want proze to get the 1200 mark

I don't see what is so bad about his benchmarks, maybe you can enlighten me. i mean for a duron at 1000mhz it compares very closely to a tbird at 1000mhz. His memory could use some help, but i thought they were decent benchmarks. So, where do you think they should be for my own knowledge. Thanks

all are good but the mem benchmarks

thats what i was talking abotu

Yeah I think Azz and Proze and everyone I've talked to agrees I need better memory - only got cheapo PC133 cas 3 at the moment - I guess I'll have to find some money and get some CAS2, it's not that expensive now anyway, £63 for 128Mb :-)
