I just got a duron and was wondering e\where you put the thermal paste to?

There's a little square on the centre and i guess that's it but it doesn't give much contact with the heatsink.

The little square is the CPU core. That is **and this is important** the only place you want to put the thermal paste.

and be careful with the little square in the center when you're putting on the heatsink cos it's delicate. chip it and you'll be buying another processor sooner than you'd expected...

i have thought on using thermal compound , my question is what would happen if u put the compound on the whole top side of the chip and not just the little square ?

Several things:

1. You'd waste a lot of thermal compound

2. You would NOT get any increased cooling

3. Some thermal compounds are slightly conductive. That could cause an electrical bridge between two paths....and poof...instant keychain :)

1 not true.
2 not true
3 true- use silicone paste.
:D

The way I see it... you WOULD be wasting thermal compound because if you put the paste all over the Duron, the paste not touching the heatsink would just sit there and heat up, not transferring heat anywhere but to the top of the CPU. So, why WOULD you get increased cooling from doing this, and why WOULDN'T it be wasting thermal compound?

I spent a lot of time trying just a little compound because everything I read said this was the correct way to apply the stuff

this could not be farther from the truth!!

I purchased a tec cooler and in the instructions it said to apply a lot of thermal compound in fact and I quote " use the entire tube suppled with this kit"

the peltier is for the water cooler that I bought (which im still waiting for buy the way swiftech) so I decided to try a little experiment with my hedgehog and put a lot of ultra sliver ( nonconductive) underneath and my temps went down 3C not a lot but every little bit helps...

Kat,
You've got me curious. Did you smear it all over the chip or just put it on the core?

I put it in a big pile on the die and let the hsf do the rest>>>

remember it has to be ultra silver not arctic silver I read over at another site that arctic silver is conductive (but only under extreme pressure) what ever that means

Under pressure is when you are in a hurry to get the HSF on and you smear it on the chip. It then can create an electrical bridge and (insert mental picture here). :)

hey guy

actually under extreme pressure means just that " pressure" or for those who dont get it (tachyon)

tension between two points (a high tension spring holding the heat sink in place)

I hope this helps all of you that do not understand (tachyon)

Kat - That was *supposed* to be a joke....oh well.

Seriously though, if you go to the Arctic Silver site, they state:
"While much safer than silver greases engineered for high electrical conductivity, Arctic Silver should be keep away from electrical traces, pins, and leads. The compound is slightly capacitive and could potentially cause problems if it bridged two close-proximity electrical paths."

Oh yeah, nowhere did it say anything about "under pressure".

ULTRA SILVER

and im sure that your making a joke ...

this is the web right??

This is the web??? Oh no....I didn't get off at the right station!!!! :)

Ummm....ULTRA SILVER?? As in Hi ho...Ultra Silver...and away!??

it has occurred to me that when an individual has run out of intelligent answer's, said person will resort to (child like humor) aka fart jokes burping and such....

Man...your fun meter must be just pegged...huh?

I have been trying to understand (from some posts ago) how smearing thermal compound across the ENTIRE chip is beneficial. If it is, please enlighten me...plain english works and I can also comprehend a more technical answer.

Sorry...not trying to be a smart a$$...I'm really trying to understand if there's something significant about lots of compound and Kat - you're the only one that I've ever seen to say more is better, but even you didn't cover the entire chip with it.

my fun meter seems to be ok but my phetsore valve is out of alignment hehehe

quote from http://peltiers.tripod.com

"USE A LOT -REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOU HAVE READ!"

taking this advice from someone that sells cooling products I decided to try a lot of compound on my hedgehog and it worked I lost 3C 39 -40 instead of 42 -43 under full load
.my full load test is rc5

I'm curious....have you removed the Hedgehog since you did that? All that compound had to go somewhere when you locked the clip down. Is it possible that you ended up doing a better job of filling the gaps and the majority of it squished out onto the chip? Do you think covering the chip lowers the temp??

kat

in the begining i installed and removed the hog" A LOT" trying different amount`s of grease and different kind`s of grease alwasy`s adhearing to the little is better than alot rule prety much the same results>>>

after my enlightehment buy jluefeins i now have a cooler and speeder tbird
