hi,

just mounted my new slk900-u on my ic7. but the temp is even warmer if compare to my stock heatsink. WTF?? using stock heatsink, idle temp was 50c load 67, using slk900-u, idle temp was 50c load 70c. any idea?

All i can say is..... OH MY GOD THATS HOT! If my CPU ever got to 67 degrees I'd flip out and spray it with a fire retardant. Are you sure it is installed properly and did you use some good compound, aka: Arctic Silver, Ceramique, and maybe the sink isn't laying on the core properly?

hi,

remount my slk900-u again, voila this time getting better, load temp 61c. i knew it's abit high but i'm not sure whether my ic7 is giving me accurate temp . my room temp was around 20-22c with ac set at 16c, but on the board it shows 25. :(

neway, the heatsink base doesnt look very flat, anyone recommend lapping on slk900-u?

The SLK-900 should have a very nice stock finish.

But I say lap everything. If you know what you're doing, it should always help, never hinder.

I H8 mobo temp sensors! I've only had a few that I thought were somewhat accurate. Hopefully, I'll be able to get a Digidoc5 soon.

Feel the sides of the base of the HS under full load. If it feels warm, then chances are the temp sensor is screwy.
If it feels hot (like, you can't hold your fingers on it) then maybe your temps are actually that high. Do you have good airflow thru your case?

Obviously, this is not a very accurate method. Just a quick check I've done here and there to help determine mobo temp sensor accuracy.

Also, I think it's kinda strange that full load temp would drop 10°C by re-installing the heatsink. Something must have been wrong. Are you using a shim? Or maybe the third time's the charm?

Hope it helps, good luck

No, its a bad idea to use brasso.

hmm, okie. so what's the best way to clean the base after lapping?

Acetone or Xylene after a good wash with soap and water.

Rubbing Alcohol (80% at least) or fingernail polish remover is the best solution I have found...but make sure to use a lint free rag...

They are solvents, commonly available in hardware stores.

Xylene is used as a cleaning agent and as a thinner for paints and varnishes. It is found in small amounts in airplane fuel and gasoline. It is also used as raw material in the chemical, plastics and synthetic fiber industries and as an ingredient in the coating of fabrics and papers. (etc...paint thinner)

Acetone is a manufactured chemical that is also found naturally in the environment. It is a colorless liquid with a distinct smell and taste. It evaporates easily, is flammable, and dissolves in water. It is also called dimethyl ketone, 2-propanone, and beta-ketopropane.

Acetone is used to make plastic, fibers, drugs, and other chemicals. It is also used to dissolve other substances.
