Well then... what else could it be thats holding me back? I'm pretty certain that I can satbly achieve a speed higher that 800mhz.... it is a pretested chip(I bought it in a moment of weakness). Besides the cooler, everything else is pretty much normal. The cooler is a big 'ol socket7 honker that I lapped and fit on to the Duron. Temps at 700mhz and 1.85v are 43(45underload)C... I'f I turn the voltage down, the temp does, naturally, follow it.

Well... Its a duron 700, an A7V mainboard(rev1.02) 8Gb Maxtor HDD, 20Gb Maxtor HDD, Kenwood 72x CDRom, Old HP 4x4x24x CDRw, CLAP Geforce 2 card, modem(lucent chipset) SBLive5.1. I've got an Enlight 300W Ps for the mainboard, one small fan(as well as the cpucooler and gpu cooler), and an old 165 watter running 6 other fans.. 4 80mm and 2 50-ish. 2 of the 80mm fans are inlets, 2 are outlets and two are inlets. The 2 50mm fans I have blowing on the backside of the A7V(right below the cpu). That was inspired by an article posted here a while ago. Running at 700mhz, with the voltage up to 1.85, I get temps in the region of 43-45C, under load. With the cpu idle, I've come home to find the cpu in the high 20's(on a cold day). The motherboard runs constantly ar 25C. My heatsink, which is lapped, is an old socket 7 sink I got from 3dcool.com... I want to say it is a socket freezer, but I don't recall exactly. I have an 80mm fan bolted onto that, and it overhangs a bit and cools the RAM as well. All the temp data was gathered using the mainboard's built in sensors, so gawd knows how accurate they are... but they are consistent. My RAM is a 128meg micron pc133 and a 256meg micron pc133.

I think I have covered everything, and I'm certain someone will let me know if I left something out.

you have given a very decent description of your setup :) I guess you are living in hot environment since you are using so many fans.

However I think your cpu temps are little high considering your setup, unless your ambient is around 30c. You might want to check if your hs is sitting flat on your cpu. I guess I don't have to mention thermal paste.

I would expect your Duron to run easy 800 even at stock voltage, and it should of course get the pretested speed. (how high was it rated?)

What happens when you set the multiplier to 8, no windows or crashes? What about 8,5 or 9, does it post there?

There has actually been rare instances of problems with multy mem sticks and VIA chiset. But if your mem is ok at 700 I cannot see why it would be upset about higher cpu speeds.

You might want to try to pull one stick out, or use different slots, or ease up on mem timings, (setting mem speed to 100, use cas 3 etc)

If you are getting really despered you might want to try to pull out all the extra stuff, (fans, extra psu, sound card, cdrw, etc) and try to oc after that.

Hope this helps.

what mb was your "pre tested " chip tested on??

might make a difference

nice description on your rig a bit long winded but nice -)
