Use something that won't scratch your hsf or chip to clean it - like the edge of a credit card or a plastic knife. If you gouge out the bottom of your hsf with a pen knife it won't help your temps ;-)
The article you posted IS old, and it makes the pencil trick seem more difficult that it is. Simply take a mechanical pencil with a fine 'lead' and cover each of the 4 L1 bridges. That's all.

i would suggest taking a needle, and manifying glass, and window defogger repair kit (conductive paint) found at auto stores. make your l1 connections permanent. one less thing to worry about!
the defogger kit or a conductive pen is your best bet
the " pencil trick" is old school and is NOT very reliable most knowledgeable people will tell you this

Well the pencil trick may be old but it does work, you have to be careful of the mechanical pencil lead as it is usually high polymer, not much graphite, I used a dixon Ticandaroga #2 soft and a mag. glass
Duron 800@ 9.5x 105
ok the pencil trick works but...
lets just say youve got your rig (using the pencil trick) screaming along at a great oc the pencil wears' off ( and yes it happens) then you have to pull every thing apart and start over
with the defogger kit or conductive pen this wont happen
once you have 150 +- cfm moving through your case and a 7000 rpm hsf sitting on your cpu it will give you a little peace of mind knowing that the graphite dust wont blow away
