View Full Version : how come my cpu is overheating??
i bought an AMD athlon 1000mhz system
the cpu temperature gets to 57 celcius whithin the first half hour at idle, can someone tell me why its heating up so much, i have a superorb heatsink by Thermaltake but i have not put any silicon paste when installing the heatsink.
thanks

AMD Athlon chips are very hot running chips. If you want your system to run cooler, you will need either more case fans or (and) a better HSF.
How high are the case temperatures? My TBird 1 ghz @ 1.070 mhz is running at 39 C max! I have a case - a PCI cooler and the Globalwin FOP 38 cpu cooler/heatsink. The temperatures in the case are around 24 C (room temperature 22 C).
Get a good Heatsink I am using FOP-38...Use good Heat Sink Compound I am using artic silver..1 of my machines is 1Gig@1150 running 38C at full load the other is Duron 700@1G running 42C at full load both on Abit KT7-R boards...Heatsink is 23.00US @ Directron.com here in houston and Artic Silver is around 13US most places worth the money...Also use as many Case fans as you can airflow is very important VERY!!!! HAPPY OCing

in the last line of your post you stated that you have not used any thermal compound ???
this would be your problem if i read your post right
you can get thermal paste at radio smack im sure this will lower your temps
if your going to oc the s__t out of your rig I suggest that you might want to consider a better hsf thermaltake has a reputation for poor performance
hedgehog or swiftech would be my recommendation

Well if you don't use any thermal paste on your orb, your cpu is gonna get really hot! I'd suggest arctic silver. Also, Orbs look cool, but they're usually a great deal less effective than a globalwin or alpha cooler. I've got an fop32 with arctic silver running on my 962mhz tbird 800, and the temp stays at 39C, same as running at 800mhz. Its a pretty safe bet that any thermal pad you have on there is keeping the cooling capacity down a lot. Use a razor blade to scrape it off the hs and clean the rest off with rubbing alcohol before you replace it.
Happy ocing

bens simple answer= cheap heatsink/fan get a globalwin or alpha you hsf is pardon my language a piece of crap (thin layer of thermal compund) VERY THIN
