I was going to buy a pair of Raptors, to set up a RAID-0, however, they are only 36.7 big, and the Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 9 is 80 gigs.

I was wondering has anybody read a review comparing the Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 9 against the Raptors?

Don't forget that 80 Gb (advertised HDD space) is really 74.5 GB in a computer.

Go for the Maxtor, two of them in the RAID0 setup.

More GB's is always a plus.

I read somewhere that the seagates that are SATA are almost like IDE drives with SATA connections. I'm not sure if this is the case with Maxtor, but if it is, then you're really just paying for the connections. Not to mention you have to buy the SATA controller adapters anyway. Of course I'm not 100% sure, but just a warning.

The seek time on the Raptors is like half of the Maxor. I have the two Rator raid running and LOVE it.

Do what I did, pop for a third data data drive and keep the raid for programs. You wont be sorry.

Listen to jennyandgreg. Raptors for speed and a third drive for storage. Its on.

I see a lot of people going with a third drive, but never knew what it was for, can you explain how you would do this, and what kind of things you would put into the raptors and then what you would put in the data drive?

So you're just putting the two raptors in a raid 0, then the third drive would just be like another partition?

I assume its 3 drives because most consider rai0 very fragile, so if you have valuable data that you would need , you would put it on the third data drive. because if adrive on the raid0 array goes bad, the data is gone

It's a good habit anyhow to run programs off one drive/partition/space and to keep your documents on another drive/partition/space.

I have no experience using RAID myself, so the question comes up: Can you run a SATA/RAID or even IDE1/RAID and then have a lone drive on IDE2?

You can run a RAID array and IDE drive simultaneously in one system, but the RAID array needs to be on it's own controller.

Mine for example was:

IDE 1: CD-RW and DVD on Master and Slave
IDE 2: 10Gb Maxtor (Master), set as a normal drive.

IDE 3: IBM 60Gig (Master). (RAID)
IDE 4: IBM 60Gig (Master). (RAID)

IDE 3 & 4 were configured to detect RAID.

You'll have to do a little rooting around to find the info. I read it a while back, and the Maxtor whips the butt of all the other 7200rpm SATA drives, but isn't as good as the 10k rpm raptor.

yeah the maxtor is an excellent drive, and if you were to put in raid they would be awesome, but the raptors are gonna be faster ofcourse so if you have the money buy 3 drives.
