View Full Version : AVI 2 VCD help. Tempg Enc doesn't seem to work anymore
OK so i'm trying to convert some avi videos into svcd so i can play them on my dvd player.
At first i used TmpgEnc with its wizard and set each one to 50% of disc capacity since they are about 25 minutes long and approx 270mb each.
everything was fine, but now when i try to use it it says the avi videos are not supported file types.
can someone help out here? or suggest another way to make svcd ready mpeg2? i burn the svcds with nero.
thanks.

I didn't know you could do mpeg2 on svcd. I thought you had to use DVD-R for mpeg2 and mpeg1 on CD-R.
maybe it is mpeg1. :(
any thoughts?
hmm, I know nero can encode avi on the fly into mpeg1, and right after it burns the cd. basically youtell nero to burn a vcd and it takes over the rest for you. however, quality was a little worse, and pal formated .avi would audio desync when converted to ntsc, so it messed those up. however , if you have ntsc formatted avi files, ala 14 to 15 frames, it should work fine.
I have a few software titels that would do it with no problem, but only tmpenc is freeware. the other one I use frequently is video studio from ulead that came from my all in wonder card
I got his from here http://www.dvdrhelp.com/tmpgenc.htm
Problems:
Some common TMPGEnc problems:
If you get an error message when opening like file unsupported or can not open or is not supported
or you get an empty(black) video preview window
or the video look wierd in the video preview window like green or purple or pink
Try first to change the directshow codec reader priority settings in TMPGEnc under Option->Environmental settings->VFAPI plug-in and right click on the DirectShow Multimedia File Reader and increase the priority to 1 or 2 or to the top of plugin-list and try open the video.
If that does not help be sure that you have installed DivX or XviD or MPG2 or DV Codecs, read here how to identify what codecs you need.
my bundled version of nero says i hafta buy the plugin from nero.com. how lame is that. :(
i'll try your other suggestion. thanks.
thanks!!! the directshow plugin priority thing musta been it :D

dvd's are encoded with mpeg2 they are just much higher bitrates.
ok i'm back and have the same problem.. this time i've tried all the plugins as highest priority and nothing works.
its a concert dvd that doesn't work at all in my parents dvd player so i figured i could make a svcd copy so they could actually watch it. the avi is encoded with divx 4.12 which is installed and working fine. every time i try to load it up it sets the bitrate at 1600kb/s which is not adjustable and is WAY over my disc size.
suggestions? :(
i tried it this way because i am more familiar with this but i'm going to try taking the dvd straight to svcd now and see what happens.
ok tried going straight from dvd to svcd and it kept erroring while trying to process the video.
this is nuts.
