I haven't had any problems (stability etc) using just a pencil, and I think you can get more precision with a pencil than most other methods - you can sharpen it to a point as small as the L1 bridges easily enough. Some people find that a pencil doesn't work for them though, and they need something with less resistance - like a conductive pen. Try with the pencil, if it doesn't work try something different - just don't waste money on a conductive pen till you've tried pencil.
I used a mechanical pencil on my duron 650@1000 and my tbird 850@1100++ for months with no problem and have NOT ever needed to reapply it.

Pencil is ok, I use it to test the processor, but then I use a defrost repair kit, to finalize it. It is available at Pep Boys, or any autoparts store. it is about 3.99 a bottle. I find it is easy to apply if you tape on either side of the L1 bridge that you are closing and dip the lead of the mech pencil in it. Good luck.
a micro tip conductive pen from webtronics work`s like a charm 12 bucks
decided to go this way because i read far to many story`s about having to do over because it didnt work the first time
