I tried to overclock my K6-2 380Mhz yesterday by raising my FSB from 95 to 97. I had to do this by jumper settings because my motherboard didn't come with CPUSoft... Anyway, I turned on the computer and fans churned but no post.. and no power to the monitor. I then hit the power button but nothing happenned. Restart button... nothing.. I then pulled the plug on it. I'm back on 95 and wondering what happenned, is it safe to go on? My motherboard supports FSB's up to 133. Should I try a 4.5 clock multiplier and a lower FSB?

You probably didn't hurt anything it sounds like your chip can't do 97 you might try jumping straight to 100 and see if it post if not do like you said lower the FSB and up the multiplier you probably wont be able to get a whole lot more than what you have now, k6-2's don't overclock well. If your pc doesn't boot just unplug it and reset the jumpers and try again.

What kind of things could happen if I raised my bus to 100mhz? I know no other components will be effected because it'll be standard 33mhz for pci and 100 for ram. Also, my cpu runs at 30 C in bios and 49 C fully in Windows without any hardcore programs on. Is it still safe?

couple of comments here:

1) your temps look good .... damn good indeed considering you are using a k6-2

2) when it doens't post ... go ahead and pull the plug .... let it set for a minute or two and try to start it back up ..... my k6-2 sometimes takes two or three attempts before it will post ....

3) what core voltage are you running .... spec'ed or other?

4) don't do anything in large steps .... or the next day you will be on here asking about the best duron set ups ...

'do or do not there is no try'
duron 700 @ 980 kt7 raid
k6.2 550 @ 700 (someday it might be stable ... i hope)

Ok. I'm at the default 2.2volts. I'll probably end up buying another fan for the front of my case to cool it down a bit also. Yeah, I would have gotten 388mhz if it had worked. I'll probably stop if I can get it stable at 400. Might push it to 430 in a couple of months after that. Just worried since this is my main system for work, school, and other stuff and won't get my dream machine until the end of the summer

just so you know, I got 100 mhz out of my k62 400 (2.5- with a generic K7 cooler modified to fit the SS7 board) 50 mhz is probably a good overclock for the k6 line, but probably barely noticible. If possible, increase the FSB to the highest setting and then change the multiplier for best overall system performance. Tom's hardware guide has some good articals on ocing ss7 system. Be aware however that when you bump up your FSB you are increasing all the buses...pci. isa, agp, and ram but most good cards and ram can handle it. for instance, I run 100 mhz ram at 115 mhz 100 % stable

ok, thanks for all the help. my final question now is what kind of effect happens to the processor by raising the fsb more than what the default is
