Will the Zalman Heatpipe VGA Cooler ZM80A-HP ....Fit on a hercules 9700pro....or will the ram sinks get in the way?

RAMsinks will only be in the way if they are above a certain height restriction, as there is a small space between the big HS plate and the PCB. I don't have a ZM80A-HP or I'd measure the gap for you, but hopefully someone here does and will.

I have one on my 9700 pro thats Built by Ati and yes if there are ramsinks on the back it would get in the way, on the front no.

did you take youres off then the ram sinks?well you must have
also did this lower what you got out of the ram?
last Q :) did you get an increase in performance ...could you overclock it more ?

thanx

p.s extremespeedy you say that you had no problems?was this a hercules card?

Going to a zalmans heatpipe isnt good if you want to overclock..it actually makes ur temps about the same or a little higher. The point of it, is for silence. Now if you have a case fan on ur window righ at ur agp, then u will get overclockability(sp?) So, i recommend getting some kind of fan to rig on it.

thats what i was thnking .....put this on and two fans ether side!

ive got two fans either side now and can not overclock anymore with them.......... without them!

so do you think the Zelman will be better?

yes, the zalman heatpipe with a fan blowing on it will get u anywhere from 15 to whatever more. For me, I havent tried to max out, but im comfortable at the settings i have it at in my sig.

check this one out. http://www.hexus.net/review.php?review=526 they overclock with that cooler plus a 80mm side fan. they can overclock the core even higher then with the standard ATI HSF. mem is a little bit lower though. very interesting!

Ok I spent the better part of the day working with this baby. I removed the shim from the 9700 pro and used AS3 for the GPU. The front 4 ramsinks can be of any size when using the Zalman on a Radeon 9700 pro. One sink on the back can be large also as it does not interfere with the back sink.

3 of them will interfere and you will need to get very small sinks, or sand the ones you have down. I filed and sanded the wings of three aluminum heatsinks from 2cooktek down untill they fit perfectly. I used tweakmonster sinks for the other 5 that do not interfere with the Zalman.

As for fans I have a cardcooler from the old days blowing onto the sinks. It has 2 80m fans.

Right now I am at 371/370 stable. Anything over 375 on the core and I get freezes in 3dmark2003. As for the mem I think I can go higher as its still perfectly stable at 370. Tomarrow I will try for 380 on the mem. Who would have thought my mem would go higher than the core! My new fans are coming in the mail. What I ordered is a Zalman fanbracket which is nice b/c you can add upto 3 fans on it and you have some control as to placement which you can not do with the card-cooler.

My plan is to use 2 92m fans on the bracket blowing down on the card and I may use an 80m fan on the back of the Zalman blowing on the heatpipe. I havent decided on that one though.

what did you get before the zalman core/memory ? there was nothing to compare it to :D

ahhh well before I got this setup I was at

340/335

at 345 for the core I would start to see artifacts in games or get some freezes. I never really pushed my memory and so I do not know how high I could have gone stock.

I just ran through 3dmark2003, 3dmark2001 SE, morrowind and quake3 demos and the mem is stable at 380. I am very surprised at this memory :) I know its Samsung 2.8 and they are not supposed to have this kind of legroom.

Tomarrow I will try for 390 on the mem :)

Yepp! thats all =)
I still have all the ramsinks on the card.

Edit: Now running 370/370... with some artifacts =( but 360/360 is crystal clear. It runs in 380/380 to.. but thats not pretty!
With stock cooler I could get to 345/340? Without artifacts.
Don't know why the ram can be oc:ed more now but i like it anyway =)

spiritedandy, I think the mem is lower because of the big heatsinks interferring with the airflow of the fan. I think... Could be taking crap though.

I believe that if you want to use a fan on the Zalman you'll have to place the fan to the center of the mem heatsinks. Better would be 2 fan's so you can place them evenly over the entire card.

EXTREAMSPEEDY how did you take the gpu heat sink off ...does it just twist off?

you're welcome spiritedandy. I think I will put to Enermax fan's next to each other to cool down the ZM80A-HP. Won't be setting them at full speed 'cause of the noise. Also, I will be setting them to blow over the card so that my Vantec Aeroflow get's some more "fresh" air as well.

I just fitted a Zalman 80HPa on my 9500 and its no different to the overclock i was getting with my Crystal Orb attached. I think part of the problem is that the Ram's heatsinks are not getting as much air flow over them, also I'm not convinced that the rear part of the zalman is actually contributing to the temps, it certainly never gets hot... I'll give it a week and also try it with Shin-etsu on the gpu core but initial tests aren't very promising :(

On the bright side its exceptionally well built & designed and easy to put together (as long as you read the instructions carefully) :D

if the back is not getting hot you should reaply the thermal grease to the pipe and plates

ive got a fan at the side and one on top just to cool everything down :D :D
